From all the reading and research I have done on this "clicking or ticking" sound on Gen 2 Volts, I strongly feel that replacing the brake booster is only a temporary solution. Numerous people have already replaced 2 boosters. I believe the problem is not a defective booster. As you may already know, the Bolts had/have this exact same issue and early on iBooster (brake boosters) were changed on GM's dime. But as months went by, GM determined a software patch would cure the problem. It took many months for them to produce and announce that patch but Bolt owners who received the patch report good results WITHOUT having to spend $2,000+. GM is doing a very poor job of supporting early electric car adopters like Volt owners. You have to wonder how well they will support new model electric cars in the future. Many Volt owners have reported that their dealers told them the noise is the EGR valve ticking (EGR located in a totally different location). Some have been told, don't worry "it's normal, Volts make all kinds of unusual noises". We need to apply some pressure or other move to get a positive response from GM. Again I would say that replacing the iBooster may rid you of the clicking in the short run and make you feel warm and fuzzy, but I believe (based on many others experiences) that you won't feel good for long. As a additional note, I have come to notice that the "clicking" behind the speedometer (the iBooster is just behind the speedo on the other side of the firewall) this noise is temperature related, at least on my Volt with 42,000 miles. The clicking nearly went away all this winter (Massachusetts), but as occasional warm days came about, the clicking returned for just those days. Then when the cold returned, the click nearly disappears. I am certain it will return to everyday driving once the spring and summer come. And the number or seconds or even minutes that the clicking occurs will get longer and longer the warmer the temps. I have heard rumors of stripped gears inside the booster. Maybe some iBoosters have that issue, but I don't believe that covers the majority of cases. I have a tough time believing that stripped gears are temperature related. Just my 2 cents....

I had my first brake booster replaced 11 months before end of warranty on my 2018 Volt. I just had my second brake booster replaced last month with 9200 miles. I didn't get back home before the ticking came back. GM has not been much help and neither has the dealer. Wish I could find a solution.

Guys, see these pages for more iBooster stories:

Sounds like a very similar problem that I had with my 2017 Volt two years ago. The noise appeared to be coming from the brake booster area. There were no brake system scan codes. The issue was diagnosed as a failed Brake Booster Control Module. The module was replaced and the system bled. Problem solved. Covered under warranty.
Here are the part numbers:
84006919 Cylinder
39081933 Retainer
I had the same issue but they fixed it with EBCM/booster part # 84669159 and same retainer part. Its covered under the emissions control warranty which is good for 8yr/80k miles in my state.

Hi all. Having the same issue, decided to see what would happen if I went online to the GM Customer Service Chat and explained the issue. Here is a transcript. I would suggest that everyone who has this issue "Message" GM here:

I have a 2018 Volt w/25k miles. the brake power booster pump that has the common Volt problem of "ticking" when the brake pedal isn't pressed. My dealer wants $2,500 to replace and says it's not under warranty. Other dealerships around the country have repaired them under warranty, either under the extended emission control or the Voltec. Who do I contact?

I've run into some trouble. I'll transfer you to one of my human colleagues.

Thank you for contacting Chevrolet Customer Assistance Center, my name is Kay. I'm sorry to hear about this, I'll see what I can do. Can I please have the VIN and the mileage?
You
Give me a second...
Kay
Okay.

Thank you, Paul. One moment please.
While I'm away, can you also help me out with your phone number and e-mail for documentation purposes?

Thank you for waiting, I don't see any bulletin or recall about this issue and I do see some active warranties on your vehicle however, we are not able to determine warranty coverage over this chat. All warranty work is determined by a GM certified dealership after a diagnosis. Were you able to talk to the Customer Experience Manager at the dealership?

They have yet to get back to me. I would like to escalate this to someone in corporate, if possible.
Kay
As much as I want to, we won't be able to escalate this since there's no recall tied to the vehicle. At this point, I suggest that you reach out to the Customer Experience Manager first as they are GM Corporate's direct contact at the dealership, they should be able to provide you with options.

Grr...You should be aware that the Bolt had the same issue and a recall was provided. Many Volt owners are having the same issue. Where's our recall?Read
Kay
I've taken a look at what's required for your vehicle and I see that your vehicle is not part any recall. Although you may have seen or heard that a vehicle which is similar or exactly yours has a recall tied to it, this does not mean that the same is true for your vehicle. Recalls are VIN-specific.

I understand. But if this is a systemic problem, Chevy should take some responsibility. I guess I'll be another dissatisfied customer. Thank you for your time.

Any updates on this? My 2017 Volt just won't stop making the noise if the car is ON and the brake pedal is not pressed. If the car is OFF, and I open the door, then the sound starts and continues for 1m22s.

My concern is that this ticking noise is a physical part that is physically moving - this excess ticking cannot be good for the part's longevity.

It feels like a limit switch may be broken or something.
But hearing that there is a software fix for the Bolt but not for the same part for the Volt is disheartening to say the least.

Has anyone disassembled the booster to figure out what the REAL problem is?

BTW, it's hot out right now, and I've heard that the problem gets worse in hotter weather - but last night even when it was cool out, it was ticking away for most of my drive.

Hello all,

Topic: Clicking, tapping, or rattle sound from parked, Chevrolet Volt from engine compartment, behind driver's side dashboard location, after recharging cord unplugged.

As an update after researching, I'm spending NO money on repairing this clicking, tapping, or rattle sound coming from the brake booster of my 2019 Volt LT.

Chevrolet Technical Service Bulletin (applied to Chevrolet Bolts, also posted by Steverino) says: "The cause of this condition may be that the I-booster valves are at the idle position and making a rattle noise".

The VOLT appears to need a software update to correct the Brake Booster as seen at the following links:
  1. youtube.com/watch?v=dWIZCE3uuB8 (performed on a Chevrolet BOLT)
  2. static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2020/MC-10187395-9999.pdf (Technical Service Bulletin)
It appears there may be no safety issue; however, please confirm this for yourselves.

Since GM has addressed this same issue in a Bolt recall, is there interest in this community in filing a class action suit?

If you are serious, contact an attorney and get it started, others would likely join.

My 2017 Volt started making this ticking noise in August 2024. The dealership wanted $185 to "diagnose" it and said that my car was out of any relevant warranty (45K miles) and that no recall/service bulletin applied (as noted above, the only bulletin on this is for the Bolt only). Based on info in this forum I decided to wait and monitor it.

In May 2025 as part of regular maintenance, I had the brake fluid flushed and replaced. Interestingly, the ticking noise stopped happening as often. It wasn't completely gone, but much quieter and less frequent.

In June 2025, my left front brake seized up while I was driving. I noticed smoke coming out of my left front wheel well when I was at a stoplight and got it back to the same shop ASAP. They said the caliper piston had "frozen" and advised replacing both front brakes to avoid uneven performance. It wasn't cheap, but it was obviously important to have working brakes again.

It's now September 2025, and the reason I am posting this today is that since the brake replacement, the ticking noise has never recurred. This repair did not replace the power brake booster assembly. The mechanic speculates that the process of replacing the front brakes, which includes an "extra bleed" of the brake fluid system, helped circulate the new fluid. I wanted to share my experience in case it helps others. I would love to know if brake fluid replacement removes the ticking noise for you.
