Why so many used Volt on the market?

Hey Everyone,

Noob here. I was browsing for a used Volt. And to my surprise, there were many of them. I thought there was a shortage on these things. And what's worst, most of them had very low miles (5k-20K). I found a handful in my range (29k-32k). What is the deal? Is it some kind of stealership con? I figure most people would do their homework before buying a 45k vehicle. I am not complaining, though. I hope the price drops a few more thousand.

haven't seen that many in the chicago market. different market though. i will be trading mine in as soon as it turns 1 year old. obama will pay me another $7500 from his stash just like he did on the first one. same for the $1000 from gm mastercard. i'm basically driving this car for a few thousand a year. just hope the volt gets the seats out of the malibu on the 2013s. that's my perdsonal so called "con".

Hmm..., I just did a private party search on any used Chevy Volt for a range of 100 miles from zip 90803 on three different used car search engines, usedcars.com, edmunds.com and cargurus.com. My search included the area from Santa Monica to the NW, Tijuana to the SE and Indio to the East, a pretty good market (Southern California) for Chevy volts.

I was unable to use usedcars.com or edmunds.com as they did not have a selection for the Model "Volt" when Make "Chevrolet" was selected. Cargurus.com only showed one, in Long Beach (Hacienda Beach) a 2011 listed for $34,500 (with no $7,500 tax credit).

Noob, how did you do your search?

According to cars.com there are 98 in the entire country for sale that are used. Lowest price is 29K with 12K miles as a base model. Since a New base model with all discounts ( 4K off MSRP ) and tax credit ( 7500 ) is 28500, I don't see the points in your post

With close to 35K Volts produced so far that's only 0.3% of all Volts produced are on the used market

I didn't find any used Volts near San Antonio on autotrader.com but I saw a couple near Austin, the first Volt city in Texas. The prices are about the same as new after the federal tax credit. Very interesting.

Cars.com returns just 93 used Volts nation-wide. What is your definition of "many"?

What search engine are you using?

I actually can't wait to see hundreds of used Volts on the market in later 2013 and 2014. Why? This is going to start allowing folks who just don't have the initial resources to buy new to get into lower-priced EREVs and start enjoying the benefits. Plus, Canadians can start buying used cars from the USA at that point at marked discounts to their northern dealerships. My new 2011 version (just picked up) will be $26K out of pocket when all the rebates and credits are done. Can't beat that. Heck, if I cleaned it up right now and sold it as-is with 1200 miles on it, I might be able to get $30K. Then I could go out and buy another one. Has anyone in Colorado, WV or PA consider "Volt Flipping" :)

Sounds like another troll in a lame attempt to plant misinformation for search engines to hook onto.

Many used car prices are generally insanely high right now. Given incentives and loan rates on new cars, the quoted used car prices are often worse than buying new. But, with the tax credit on the Volt, I could easily see the used Volts in northern states becoming Canadian imports.

Hey Everyone,

I used Cars.com/Autotrade.com for my search. My market range was everywhere in America, since it is relatively cheap to ship a car, especially if I can get a Volt for 29k. I did a similar search early this year and found less than 10 used Volts. And now there are nearly 100. I consider that a lot because I thought there was a shortage of these things. And didn't the super low miles shock anyone? I guess people are "flipping" their Volts.

@Henry...where can I get that 4k discount off msrp? Who is your stealership/salesman? Is this for "1" new Volt, or a fleet? I will go cross country for discount. Thank you.

I'm not seeing any great deals on Volts. In fact I'm seeing what I'd consider to be bad deals. In San Diego and LA there are zero cars that meet your screen on cars.com or carmax.com. Cars.com shows one car at $33K but it has 18K miles on it. The other cars are all at $35K.

So is a used Volt at $35K a good deal? Well you can pick up a new 2012 MY for under $40K. Take off the $7500 tax credit and you're at $32.5K. If you're in CA take off another $1.5K for the CARB rebate. Now we're at $31K. Plus the MY 2012 is HOV lane eligible. That adds $3K to the resale. Deciding between a brand new Volt for $31K or used for $35K? I'm not seeing the allure of the used.

Leasing, leasing, leasing

This is one of the best leasing deals out there. That definitely helped overcome those who were ineligible for the $7500 as individuals. God Bless it. There would be many fewer on the market had GM not come up with that idea.

P.S., LOVE my Volt, love the incredible energy savings and the FACT IS - CHEVY VOLT, AMERICAN-MADE, AMERICAN-FUELED. Good for America and jobs here in our country.

Be thankful. Not everyone can afford this car. These are obvious leases through GM and Ally financial. Canadians will appreciate this, since they can get the $7500 credit through a resale.

I do want another, but I picked up a new Volt fully loaded for $29,900 plus sales tax. Total with tax about $33,200. A bargain. This car rides smoother than my Lincoln MKX and is far more comfortable and less chattery inside. The Lincoln is quality, just compared to the Volt, they did a lot of things well in this first out the door concept. Obviously well tested, tried and true. The only major issue was that ONE CAR with the battery issue. And the fix was worse. Fortunately the new makes already have the enhancement panels, no rework required. That was a mess.

Not a troll post I believe. The reason there are so many used Volts in California is because of the HOV decal, which the 2012 Volt with the Low Emissions Package is now eligible for (starting early this year). People traded in their 2011 and early 2012 model-year Volts for new 2012 Volts with the special package. Hopefully Chevrolet has plans to make this package standard for the Volt everywhere.

Many dealers had to take on demo Volts, which after 6 months, they are allowed to sell as a used vehicle. It is likely that a lot of these "used" Volts are the demo Volts that can now be sold.

The number of used Volts for sale from individuals could probably be counted on one hand.
