Toyota bZ4X electric SUV: Not for long trips?

One Driver's Report:
"EV road trips can be with the wrong car. I drove the new Toyota bZ4X electric SUV from New York to Washington DC, and back. The nine-hour drive involved three hours of charging. I learned the hard way that sometimes you need to choose between staying warm and maximizing range."

"On the way down to D.C, I pulled into an Electrify America station with a 37% charge, looking to add just enough energy to make it the rest of the way. The Toyota refused to pull more than 35 kW, so just getting to 74% took a full 45 minutes of waiting around — not exactly something you want to do at night when you still have hours of driving ahead of you."

Up until very recently, as in two to three weeks ago, Toyota's position on BEVs was that they aren't worth the effort to build because they're a short term stop on the way to Hydrogen. The BZ4X's road trip performance is the direct result of this philosophy. What happened last month is Mr. Toyoda stepped down as CEO and they have a new CEO who views BEVs as a long term solution that needs to be addressed immediately.

Given the way the media has covered this fiasco, I suspect the bZ4X operated exactly as intended - to discredit BEVs.

I looked at the Toyota and Subaru Solterra specs before they came out. 200 mile range and slow DC fast charging - that means pretty worthless for long trips.

The GM Equinox and Blazer EVs will have models with 300 mile ranges and fast DC chargers that actually charge fast.

Electrics need both, or a gas engine like the Volt.😄

The point taken by the article is to buy an EV based on your regular needs. If you need a long distance driver regularly, make sure the DCFC rate will be in your comfort zone. The Toyota for this driver was not.

I just did a 2500 round trip from AZ to Austin,TX. for the Moto GP races there in one of our two '13 Volts that has 80K on it. Apx 30 MPG at 90ish avg speed and 5 minute pit stops made for about 14 hours each way = completely undoable in an BEV. The second one has about 135K on it and still gets 30 EV miles/charge with a 3" lift and 225/65/17 tires on it. It's mostly my ranch and errand "PEPE" these days but has made four similar trips. Stay well everyone.
