I am stuck between a modified leaf 240 volt charger (water proof) but 750 vs the SPX 240 with a plug.

Anyone have experiance / thoughts either way.... i dont live where I can get a free charger. I want it to be portable because i have a 240 plug available at both families houses and it would reduce my 1.1 gallon a week use down to less then .3.....

thanks in advance for your thoughts!

I have the modified LEAF EVSE. It is excellent and versatile. It's pretty easy to wire different types of connectors for different situations. The cost went up considerably, however, and that is an unfortunate deterrent. Functionally, however, the Nissan is great.

SPX portable works great for me. It allows running cord up to ceiling and drop down to plug spot. No putting up or retrieving. It's right where you need it, shows you where to park and not on floor to trip on or step on. If you are visiting another location for extended time take it with you and make an adapter for various receptacles (dryer, R/V, etc.)

I have an SPX Power Xpress. The coiled charge cord vs a non-coiled charge cord is a personal thing, in my opinion. I have two houses and when I travel to each I have to take the mounting bracket with me. Its a pain, especially if you lose it for a day or two. You can see a photo album of my installation here.

I have the upgraded Leaf EVSE, and have been very happy with it. I paid the price to get the flexibility and sturdy design/construction.

At this point, though, if you're talking about two known fixed locations, how much more would it cost to install two of the $450 Voltec units? That'd be even more convenient for you use, and not much more to procure - and when you buy a second Volt, you'll have a cord for it, too. :)

I have the modified Leaf EVSE. Yes, its expensive, but it works very well on 120 and 240.

I built a custom J1772 charger using parts from Digikey and a J1772 plug from eBay. Cabling I used is good for up to 30A, although, the Volt only pulls a fraction of that.

Total build cost was about $325, including putting in an L6-30R 240V outlet on it's own circuit myself.
Way cheaper than buying anything pre-built. And I think I may have used my 120V charger once since then. 4 hours vs 10 hours... can't beat the 240V charging, although, I wish the Volt had a 6kW charger in it...

The SPX Power Xpress Wall Mount has a plug in option. You can learn more on our website, https://homecharging.spx.com/volt/Display.aspx?id=25&menu=13 . The Power Xpress is very robust and can withstand harsh weather so there is no need to worry about charging outdoors. If you have any questions or would like to purchase a Power Xpress, please do not hesitate to contact us at 1-877-805-3873. ~Meghan, SPX EV Team

As compared to other 240V household appliances, the Volt doesn't really draw much. At about 3.25kW, the volt uses less than most electric ranges or dryers. So, generally, those outlets should work, provided you can match them to an EVSE J1772 charger.

I set up my Voltec L2 EVSE to be portable - it's mounted to a plate that connects to the wall, and has a L6-30 plug on a pigtail coming out the bottom. That configuration was about $550 or so - 500 for the EVSE, 50 for wiring and parts (my memory is vague on the exact price of the wiring/plug/socket).

Can you post any pictures or part numbers?

I am considering a Volt for one of my daughters, but we will need to charge the car at 3 different locations.

$850 (sale price) for the portable 240 volt charger is pretty steep for this country-boy!

You wire it the same, just change the plug (on the end that connects to the wall socket). The Power Xpress automatically determines the input voltage and adjusts accordingly. For example you could install an L6-30 (twist lock 30A plug) and then make adapters including an adapter to a 5-15 or 5-20 120V socket. Make sense?

Of course, I have a Power Xpress and would never use it on 120V. In those cases I just use the L1 EVSE that comes with the Volt.
