The Volt, car guy approved!

So I had to get a NYS safety inspection today and needed to get pictures for my insurance. I took my 13 Volt into the local automotive shop. The guys there were like kids in a candy store. They were enamored with it. A bunch of them came over to look at it. They were asking all sorts of questions about it. They were all amazed at the technology in it. The manager said "this here is the future of cars".

The manager asked how I liked it, I told him I loved it. I told him my average commute is 28 miles both ways so I don't use any gas. I told him my commute now costs me .56c a day now in electric charges. I told him I haven't put gas in the car since I bought it 2 months ago. He was like "get out of here". I said "no really". He said "you haven't gone to a gas station at all". I said "Yes, I've been to the gas station but only to get a drink".

They were all impressed with the Volt. Just goes to show that even car guys can get behind the car when they understand it.

New idea for a GM commercial series:

- various statements from Volt owners.
- others say "Get outta here..." (reminds of Sienfeld bit with Elaine pushing Jerry away)
- Volt owner says "no, really!"
- maybe they could use the phrase with some memorable action (like clutching their wallet in fear for the next gas station visit)

Could be an interesting campaign. Gas prices are rising, especially in the mid-west. Along with GM's recent heavier rebating, they need to get the word out that the Volt is not only electric. It's "electric near, gas far".

The manager said "this here is the future of cars".
Been out for almost three years now. But these folks seem to act like this is the first one they've ever seen or heard about.

Great story. I really love how people can fawn over the Volt. They are even more amazed when they hear how long Volts can go without gas they are simply stunned.

However, I would not go to a gas station for a drink. My Volt has an aversion going near them :). It had to suffer going two days in a row. Sunday, I went to "fill up" with 1.2 gallons, then yesterday I decided to inflate the tires up to 45 psi. It's only been to a gas station 3 times in 18 months.

I realize this post is a bit stale, but why would you go to the gas station to inflate the tires? Can't you use the spare-tire replacement inflater in the trunk?

I am wondering because when I got min it had 33 psi and I just plugged in the pump to the 12V outlet and added the desired pressure. Am i missing something?

Speaking of psi...

My wife's Honda CR-V has a door-label saying the tires should be 30 psi. The dealer delivered with 37 psi. Max pressure on sidewall is 40psi.

My Volt was delivered to me last July with 33 psi... About the only negative when buying from the dealer I got it from.

The guys at the car wash totally loved the Volt. They said stuff like "I can't believe this is a Chevy. Much better interior than my Dodge." I haven't had to do any maintenance yet.

My coworkers are very impressed with the 326.23MPG I got last month. I haven't been to a gas station since 4/28/2013. (and counting.)

"My Volt was delivered to me last July with 33 psi"

Mine was delivered with 34psi of NITROGEN. Lol. When I asked for 38psi, the said they got the car from another dealer and they didn't have any way to fill them with N2.

So, I took the goofy-looking N2 valve stem caps off and put black aluminum ones on after filling up in my garage with plain air.

BTW, I bought a 12v compressor that has a settable automatic shutoff. Each tire is exactly the same psi. AND, I don't need to go to any stinking gas station for air.

I actually had someone single to me to roll down my windows while driving in slow traffic. He asked if I could pull off the road, since he wanted to ask me question about my Volt. I pulled off the road and explained all the advantages of the Volt and that I make my 42 mile round trip weekday commute all on electricity. He asked me if I had range anxiety and I had to reiterate that the Volt has a 9.3 gallon gas tank and has an EPA of 35 / 40 on gas. I told him the only anxiety I have is actually more of a joke, since I try not to use gas even tough, if I run out of the stored charge, I would only use a small amount of gas. I told it becomes a game of trying to avoid using gas, if you can, but it doesn't change your lifestyle one bit. I even told him one night I forgot to charge my Volt, but had enough of a charge left to make it to a parking lot which is a 7 minute walk from work, so I parked there for the day and my car was completely charged when I picked it up, but I would have just used a little gas, if a charging station could not be found.

It's never happened to me, but the wife told me one time a cop pulled up next to her at a light and motioned for her to roll down her window. He proceeded to ask her a few questions about the Volt before the light turned green.

Still remember this one guy that stopped me for a bit while I was heading into a package store. He asked me how I liked the Volt, and how does it drive, how's the range, etc.....commented on how nice a car it was.
10 minutes later after I came out of the store, I see the guy still gawking at the car, and then tells me again how nice a car it is before I left.

Lots of car guys wear their politics on their sleeve. I've had fun disarming a couple, and instead appealing to what I see as a lurking respect for the technology. Volts are pretty rare, where other plug-ins tend to be just another version of something much more common.

If you are a Costco member the tire center techs. will check your tire pressure and fill them
with nitrogen up to the max sidewall pressure listed on the side of the tire even if you did
not buy them there. This is a least what they do for us in the Warrenton, Oregon Costco Store..
