Temperature Related Squeaks and Rattles?

For the last few weeks while driving home from work the front passenger door would rattle intermittently. Sounds kind of like styrofoam rubbing together. When I got home the other day I was determined to pin it down.

I could reproduce the sound if I wiggled the door back and forth rapidly. If I pressed on the part of the door shown by my finger in the attached picture the rattle would stop.

When I tried it today nothing rattled at all. What's different? Here's my theory but I'm happy to hear others. It's actually colder today than it was this past week but the car started it's day in my garage and as I drove around I had comfort on at 74 degrees. I preconditioned so the cabin never got very cold. I knew I was doing a bunch of short hops so there was no problem with me running out of EV range.

During the work week my car sits outside in the company parking lot. It was in the 30s-40s on my drives home. Since my commute is 43 miles I use the heat less liberally. The fact that my car was cold, sitting outside from morning to evening dealing with the changes in temperature is the only reason I can think of for why the rattle is intermittent. If you have an alternate theory I'd be happy to hear it.

My driver side door doesn't exhibit this behavior regardless of the temperature.

Two questions:
1) How is that panel attached to the door?
2) If I brought it into the dealer what would they do to fix it?

There are a few threads on low temp and squeaks and rattles, one Volt owner even stuffs towels in the headliner to quite them.

It could be a dirty door gasket. I wipe mine down every week when I wash the car and I treat them monthly with a silicone dressing. Mine don't squeak, but whether it's from this or not, hard to say. Doesn't cost much to give it a try.

This. I had the same styrofoam type squeaks coming from the headliner area on my CMax. I got a can of silicone spray from O'Reileys auto parts (their store brand for $5) and applied it to all 8 door gaskets. It took a day or two to work in but it helped tremendously.

I've also noticed that with the onset of cold weather, below 30 degrees, my steering wheel sort of squeaks or more like groans when I turn the wheel. I will probably mention it to the dealer when I go back for my first oil change. A little worrying as I had a car long ago once that developed this condition and they never could get it to go away. I just learned to hate it and live with it. UGH. Anyone else have this?

Ditto. I actually wedged a business card in there on a long drive where it was driving me crazy. Dealer couldn't reproduce it the last time I had it in.

In over two years of ownership, the one styrofoam squeak that happens only near the window, on the dash, on the passenger side, on hot summer days, is the biggest issue I had with the car.

Too it to the dealer last summer, while the noise was happening. Had to wait a little while for the manager to come take it for a drive. Had left the car on, on battery with ac on, in the cool drive through garage. By the time we got in the car to drive it, right away I knew the noise had gone. That's when I made the connection with it being temperature related. Didn't have another opportunity to take it back, before the temperatures drop, and the noise goes away until next summer.

My friend with 4 month old Tesla talks about how great the service is when he takes his Tesla in for some issues, I don't say anything, but think about how I only took my Volt in after over a year to get the oil changed and a few "customer satisfaction" things they kept bugging me to come in and have done (battery reinforcement, 120v cord swap, driver airbag check). So while I generally hate the customer service people at GM dealers, I've not had to go see them as often as my friend with the Tesla sees his. Though the Tesla is a very nice car.

YES. Your dealer should take care of it under warranty. They have people who specialize in kiling squeaks and rattles. They have experience. They have special tools & techniques. Take it to a pro if you can't solve it. If your dealer gives you any argument about it... Call your Volt advisor at: (866) 790-5600. They are there to help you get issues like this resolved to your satisfaction.

The door trim panel is attached to the door with clips. Personally I would agree with Fulgerite and just take it to the dealer if it's still under warranty. I'm batting about .500 lifetime at removing trim panels without breaking something.

I tried a few things like jamming felt between that part of the door (the part in the picture on my OP) and my car but it didn't do the trick. I guess it's not pushing down with the required amount of force. I'm 1,000 miles away from a tire rotation. That's about a month of driving for me. I figure when I bring it in for that I'll ask them to tighten up the door too.

The sounds on mine are growing as the temps go south. If fact, just below the center stack, when it gets really cold, that hollow space in front of the shifter, when I accelerate or decelerate, sounds like a rocking chair. Push the pedal, creak, take foot off pedal...creak....
