Is there a Gracenote fix to keep it from switching selected screens?

I did a search on the forum and found that others are having the same problem I have discovered on my 2013...Gracenote constantly changing my selected screen when listening to music on my USB connected iPod. Is there a fix to this? It is pretty annoying as I like to drive with my NAV screen up but it keeps switching to the album art iPod screen.

Funny you should ask me today. I just finished talking to the Volt tech at my dealership who is fixing an unrelated problem. Apparently, he was chatting with a GM tech assistance guy who was supposedly very intimate with the whole Gracenote thing. The GM tech guy says that it is an Apple problem. I have an iPod Classic and apparently the iPod is telling the Volt infotainment system (through Gracenote) to generate the album art repeatedly, so Gracenote dutifully follows the iPod directions. The GM tech said that he got it to stop by shutting off the album art within the iPod itself. Apparently it is done through iTunes or through the iPod settings- he wasn't sure which. I'm getting my car back from the dealership today and I am going to try to shut it off and see what happens. Let me/us know if you are able to figure it out.

Thanks very much for the reply. Well here's the deal: I'm not using any Apple product. Or any other USB device that has any inherent integration with Gracenote or other artwork/song indexing solution. It's just a FAT32-formatted USB thumbdrive with a bunch of mp3's on it. And the phone that I'm pairing is an Android.

From what I've read on the forum, GM was blaming Apple early on, but later backpeddled.

I hope the dealer found a fix that works for you, but I have the same symptoms. So far nobody has an answer for me.

Somehow I missed this earlier thread.
Gracenote is actually integrated into the GM MyLink and Intellink systems.
What happens when you turn Gracenote NORMALIZATION OFF in Audio Options? (or ON if it was OFF)

Hi WOT - yes, tried that already. It was the only option I could find for Gracenote; no change.

I personally haven't seen proof that it's Gracenote-related although it's a plausible theory: Gracenote needs the BT pathway through the cellphone to the internet - no BT pairing = no screen changing to display artwork. Wonder what happens if someone has a barebones cellphone with no internet plan. I'm pretty sure I read a thread on this forum where someone with the problem claimed they had a simple flip-phone.

In deference to the "GM tech assistance guy's" assertion that the ipod is initiating requests to Gracenote through the Infotainment, I'm pretty sure my plain ol' thumbdrive full of mp3's is not initiating requests of any kind to Gracenote or my Infotainment system.

Sounds like it's simply a bad line of code in the radio to me. Wish someone would get on it so I can get back to enjoying this amazing automobile. The frustrating part for me is that most people say an update fixed it for them, whereas I supposedly have all the updates.

I will pass that fact along to the tech I was dealing with. I seriously doubt a thumb drive is sending signals to Gracenote, too.

I can't say that yours is the same problem as mine was, but here were the characteristics of my problem so you can see if your symptoms are the same. It would occur reliably if both 1) my iPhone 5 was connected via BT and 2) I was listening to music from the USB drive. When those were both true, then any screen other than the Gracenote USB screen would be replaced every several seconds by that USB screen. When either of those conditions were not true, then it never happened. When it happened, I would first see the BT icon disappear, then reappear and that's when it would change screens. This happened all the time. The problem was resolved for me with the PIO880 GM Nav/Radio service update and I haven't seen it since.

(While we know it happens with iPhones, that doesn't mean it only happens with iPhones. While GM was trying to pin it on Apple for a while, I have to assume it was a GM issue since their update fixed it.)

Sounds very similar to my problem except I haven't had another pair of eyes in the car to watch the BT icon, and software updates didn't provide a remedy for me.

Tonight I disabled mobile data com on my android phone while still allowing BT. The problem persisted so it seems Infotainment will attempt to poll Gracenote anytime it's paired with a phone. That would coincide with the poster who had the problem while paired with a basic flip phone. I also notice that when starting out, the screen begins switching every couple of minutes, but after about 20 minutes of driving it switches more frequently, maybe every 10 secs.

I've been fighting this battle for almost 4 months with 2 different service dept's. I've become accustomed to assigning one entire arm to the sole purpose of forcing the screen back to NAV. Even with all my practice I still have to take my eyes off the road to make sure I don't brush against the wrong button.

GM - we've done your homework for you. If you can't, or are not motivated to fix this properly at least please give us an option to disable Gracenote before I cause an accident.

WOT - a correction. My only Gracenote option is Normalization, not Compression.

According to my 2013 Infotainment manual, Normalization only controls certain GN aspects like improving voice recognition and song sorting. However, a web page for the 2012 Volt implies that disabling Normalization prevents GN from working altogether.

After hours of studying manuals and the internet I can only say I'm thoroughly confused by conflicting information re. this, as well as about MyLink vs. whatever they're calling my Bose audio/NAV system. If Normalization is indeed supposed to disable GN, it would seem either it is not doing what it's supposed to or the problem we're experiencing is not even related to utilizing GN. My guess is that it's not supposed to disable GN, and that is one thing I can say that is working correctly:cool:

The Gracenote Compression setting you referred to might be related to disabling their acoustic fingerprinting algorithm, perhaps on another model?

Sorry yes, I meant Normalization not Compression
It's always been my understanding that Gracenote was disabled entirely when Normalization was turned OFF
http://www.chevrolet.com/ownership/mylink-hub/mylink-12ccr/be-entertained-gracenote.html
Turning OFF GN Normalization should permit the device itself (e.g. ID3, iTunes library files) to handle any data organization, track names etc.
So I/m not so sure Gracenote is the source of this switching issue if it persists with Normalization OFF
Will look into this a bit more

Just to follow up on this in case anyone else is in the same boat - I finally got them to swap out the radio with a new one, problem gone. I noted installed software versions before and after the swap and didn't see any change. Just defective hardware apparently.

Really? A hardware problem? Never would have guessed that. Thought for sure it was some sort of software bug. Glad they fixed yours.

Gracenote for me still steals whatever screen I'm looking at and pretty much makes the center screen unusable if I'm listening to an iPod. Very frustrating. Did you have the radio replaced specifically for the Gracenote issue? Is there a service bulletin or something that I can refer my dealership to so they can fix my Gracenote problem with a radio swap?
