Comment From Fulgerite:
Can you tell us approx. how many real world crashes that your technicians have responded to so far?

Jim Federico:
Fulgerite, we have responded to approximately six real world crashes severe enough for us to depower the battery. After review of all six we have been very pleased on how the Volt has performed in customer safety when considering the severity of the accident.

Comment From Bill Gerth:
Is a non-conductive coolant being considered as a later upgrade? Is this a cost issue or one of thermal properties?

Doug Parks:
Bill, all coolants have some level of conductivity. We have examined other coolants with less conductivity, but they have negative long-term thermal properties that do not meet our specifications.

Comment From Fulgerite:
I understand why it may not be feasible to retrofit existing batteries with conformal coating on the circuit boards... But you should consider protecting the circuit boards from coolant on future designs.

Doug Parks:
Our circuit boards in our batteries do have conformal coatings. All I can say is this was a rare event of coolant interacting with the circuit boards and connectors. This is why we feel it is important to prevent coolant leakage into the system.

Comment From John Sobecki:
Any comments on the future Voltec family? Spark? Equinox class or compact 4x4 SUV?

Jim Federico:
John - love that you have questions about future product but if we told you we'd have to kill you. Stay tuned.

Actually, I'm thrilled with the $3K replacement cost. If mine makes it through the warranty and then I have to replace it for 3K, I'll be OK with that. And maybe it will be cheaper aand/or better by then.

BTW, MTN Ranger this is a very interesting and informative thread. Thank you for it.

I'm sure that's a special case price (Gm assuring customer satisfaction), and if you just wanted to buy one, say for your solar home, it'd be closer to the 8k number.

And, even at that, it'd be comparably priced to the high quality Rolls-Surrette "submarine lead acid" batteries I use for the kwh involved. And smaller, lighter, and likely longer lived, while having a lot less loss. Assuming you could put up with the temperature control complexity and so on.

Solar people who know that it's the batteries that need the most work are definitely drooling for when these can be used in solar PV homes - it will take some doing, but I know I want one. At that voltage, a simple H bridge inverter would be pretty simple and a lot cheaper than what we can get now on top.

It's not a special case. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a large core charge, and I wouldn't be surprised if GM is subsidizing the price (i.e. it costs GM more than they charge.)

The other thought that occurred to me is they may figure that by the time cars are out of warranty the cost will be down to that range.

But it's a real price, available throughout the dealer network to any Volt being fixed anywhere from what I've read.
