On 2012 Volts, the bluetooth will only operate on the phone.. If you play an ipod or the music through the iphone, it will not stream.

Is there an update on this? Software or is it a hardware issue?

Thanks
Peter

The head unit in the 2012 is different than 2013 and does not support Bluetooth Audio Streaming.

You can get aftermarket adapters which do this, but at this point you might as well just use the line in under the center console armrest, since it is hard for phone to pair with car and separate audio adapter without creating other issues.

I use an old Bluetooth headset unit (Sony MW600) plugged into the aux port. I don't know about the iPhone, but my Nexus 5 has no problems pairing with all of Volt, MW600 and MyEV data logger simultaneously though I usually have to tell it to connect to the headset adaptor (it connects automatically only when the MW600 is turned on and I usually forget to turn it off when I get out of the car). If you have a suitable Bluetooth headset, or can find one going cheap then I can recommend this solution, I also had to buy a 3.5mm male to male adapter to connect the headset adapter to the car, but that was just pennies.

If you don't already have one then the Blackberry device suggested by @LKN_Volt may be better (if it is powered from the car so it turns on automatically rather than running off a battery it probably connects automatically rather than manually).

You may want to try the BlackBerry ACC-41596-001 Music Gateway. It plugs into the USB and 3.5mm port under the armrest in my 2012 Volt. After pairing with your phone, it will auto connect each time you start the car. We use it with an iPhone 6 and Samsung Note 4. The music quality is good but the maximum volume level is a tad bit low. Still it's more than satisfactory. For phone calls, you'll still use the original controls on the steering wheel. Don't forget to select the aux input on the radio when using the music gateway.

Peter,

I will mention the obvious fact that you CAN stream music using a USB cable plugged into the center arm rest USB socket. This also has the added benefit of charging your phone while you drive. It also lets you see & select your playlists and music on the center dash display and advance songs using the steering wheel controls.

You can plug in an aftermarket bluetooth USB adapter into the analog port in the center arm rest as well. But using bluetooth audio will not let you see & select music on the center dash screen. And streaming music via bluetooth will drain your phone battery more quickly as well.

I recommend leaving a USB plugged into our center arm rest USB power and simply plugging in the cable when you get in the car. This lets you use the car's steering wheel controls & dash display to select music and you can charge your phone at the same time.

There was a significant hardware change that took place in 2013 with the roll-out of the MyLink radio family.
Previous to that (non-MyLink) the Bluetooth RX/TX was in the OnStar module and used exclusively for hands free calling.
In the MyLink radios (2013+) the Bluetooth in the radio chassis (not really the "head" as that is just a display) and had the added functionality of streaming audio.
As the audio systems of modern cars is so heavily integrated into the body electrical system (for instance the audible warnings and chimes) it simply isn't practical (or in most cases even possible) to swap hardware between vehicles/years.
