2013 infotainment screen went black

Hey guys,

I’m having a weird problem with my infotainment center not working on my 2013 volt. This includes a blacked out screen, no radio, and no working USB charger cable. The last thing I did before the screen went black was turn off the radio. I’m not sure if that has anything to do with it or not. I’ve alreadydisconnected the battery for five seconds to see if a reset would help with no luck. I’ve also checked some of the fuses although there may be one I missed. I also had a minor accident recently that may have jiggled one of the wires loose. Any helpful tips before I rip apart my dashboard are appreciated.

You can hit the voice command button on the steering wheel and say "radio on", to see if it's just the screen failing (doubtful) or the radio head unit (more likely). Do you hear any audio, like even turn signal clicks? If not, it's likely the head unit failed. See my signature for my saga replacing the head unit. You can save a lot of money doing it yourself but certain things are tricky (unlocking a used unit, and reprogramming) and it can be a pain. It's very easy to access though.

The one thing that puzzles me is the non-working USB cable.... I don't think the head unit runs that (but I honestly don't know), so maybe there is a power issue that feeds the head unit (and that cable) that is the real issue? That's beyond my knowledge. You can always pony up the ~$140 for dealer to diagnose and then see if you want to solve it yourself.

Try disconnecting the 12V battery for a longer period of time. Five seconds may not be long enough. 30 minutes is definitely long enough.

FYI, power cycling may fix a nonworking USB port. When the USB port in my Gen 2 Volt dies, I can bring it back to life by unplugging the infotainment fuse for several minutes. However, if I reinsert the fuse too soon, it doesn't fix the problem.

Thanks for the info guys! My turn signal sound does work, and I did take out the fuse and unplug the battery, but only briefly, I will try again tonight to see if disconnecting for longer fixes the problem. I’m also getting a new error code u01040 which has to do with an error communicating with the body control module. I will let everyone know if I can fix the problem with resets or if something more sinister is brewin.

just checked the battery with my multimeter, 8v. That’s pretty low for a newer battery I purchased less than a year ago! Also, I plugged lights into both of the DC outlets and they were working, but after a second attempt they both stopped providing power. All this makes me think the 12v has been drained by some wiring issue, or maybe it’s just a bad battery. Will replace or recharge tomorrow and see if it fixes the issue.

I just replaced it last year, I suppose it could be defective. The more I investigate the more I feel like it’s a hardware problem. This is the 8th issue I’ve had with this car in 10 months of owning it. 😓 Will probably break out the voltage meter and check continuity at some point but that feels daunting. At a loss with this car I love it when it’s flawless but I’ve experienced very little of that since purchasing.
