I just bought a 2013 Volt. Loving it. HAve a question about the charging cord that comes with the Volt.
I have noticed on several videos on U-TUBE that there is a light on the plug part of the cord. was this
standard? Mine does not have a light...

Well, in this case the de-contenting and cost savings angle doesn't fly for me. The one without the light is a much higher quality unit. The light might be cool, but the rest of the unit isn't worth a flip. I'm much happier with the non-lighted unit.

welcome, as noted by others, the earliest charge cords and some of the more recent ones had a plug light. Neither of the 2013 vintage cords that I have owned have had a light.

My 2013 has a light on the plug. My brother-in-law's 2013, purchased the same day, does not. I do like the light and I'm happy to have it. As for the quality of the unit, it has not let me down yet.

I keep expecting the MIB to show up to find out why my ORIGINAL unit which has been plugged in for 3 and 1/2 years in a outside covered car port is still working.

I keep a spare unit inside the car but have not needed to use it.

Yes, your particular model has no light -- if it had (and was working properly) it would light up when squeezing the handle. It was a truly boneheaded decision by GM to remove the light. Someone hadn't had his morning coffee that day. The 120v models made by Lear, including the 1st and 2nd gen models with the orange cords + orange amp selector button (light near btm of handle), and then the more recent, updated Lear version (for 2010-12 parts replacement of older, failed units -- black cords + black button) have the light (light in dead center of handle, in middle of actual terminals). The 2013-14 Clipper Creek-manufactured (made for GM) 120s (black cord, no button) were designed with the light and even have the internal wiring for it, but at the last minute GM changed it to omit the LED. Stupid decision to save a few pennies. The new 2015 units (black cords with no amp buttons) are now, surprisingly made by both Clipper Creek and, back again, Lear. Lears have the light, and CCs don't. And yes, the Lear-made units (made in Mexico) have higher failure rates than the Clipper Creek made versions (boards made in California), although the newest version of the Lear units (black cords) may have now finally had their engineering bugs worked out (any teardowns yet?). Only time will tell. It is unknown what features the new 2016 evses will have.... Perhaps laser beams and death rays. Of all things, this Voltec EVSE business has got to be one of the most disappointing design 'issues' with the Volt, for multiple reasons.

GM shows the same part# for the EVSE from 2013 thru 2017, some have the light, some don't. Now if the optional port light for the 2016 will fit the Gen 1, problem solved for those that need a light. :D
