Either of you guys contact your volt advisor about this?

Number one on my list right now when the lease is up is a 2015 Golf TDI.

Yes, I did, but it was quite a while ago. I think they basically said get back to them if the second dealership I tried couldn't figure it out. I don't think I followed up beyond that. At this point I'll stay with the clunk for the duration of the lease. I usually have the radio or Pandora on so it's not that big a deal. If I were keeping the car I'd follow up on it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I emailed my Volt advisor. I'm calling in the big guns now.
Afternoon NoRegrets78,

Let me know what they find out for you!

Afternoon Dannyrusso,

I apologize that you are experiencing this concern as well. If you do decide to have it looked at please feel free to PM me and your Advisor and they can reach out to our technical team. If you could record the sound you are hearing it may help the tech in the diagnosis.

Thank you,

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind. Right now I'm hoping I make it through this next snow storm.

A testament to the Volt's handling on ice, I slid down a hill on a narrow road covered with ice last weekend. There was a car halfway down the hill that had hit an embankment and was partially in the road. I was able to slide past him and managed to steer the car all the way to the bottom of the hill. Brakes were locked up the entire time, with the anti-lock and traction control doing their jobs. That was a close one!

Same issue here. I've been under the car a number of times; everything is tight, bushings look and feel as they should, nothing is loose. I can't replicate the noise when the car is at a standstill. But it's driving me crazy when I drive the vehicle around.
Hi Kincade,

I apologize you are experiencing the noise concern as well. I could contact your Advisor as NoRegrets78 and Dannyrusso have done. they will be able to work with your dealership and contact Technical if need be.

Ian,

Thanks, I appreciate the offer. Frankly, the last experience with the advisor/dealership wasn't that great... The dealer wasn't aware of the appointments the advisor made, advisor wasn't in, etc. Not to mention I paid to have 2 shocks fixed which didn't fix the problem.

But I'm willing to give it another shot if I can get this fixed. My B2B warranty is up at this point and I really don't want to pay dealership prices to randomly replace parts.

I'll try my advisor again and see if she can help.

Morning Kincade,

Sorry to hear your first experience was not pleasant. See what your Advisor says and hopefully they will be able to help!

How long does it take to get a reply usually? I emailed my advisor a few days ago but have not heard back.

I'm wondiering if the email address I have is any good.

I just googled the problem to see if the symptoms we are seeing are on other vehicles as well.

All signs after the shock was replaced are pointing to the wheel bearing. Is there a way I can confirm that on my own before trying to bring it in?

That's odd. I always thought a bad wheel bearing would sound more like an loud hum, or grinding sound. Never heard of one causing a clunking sound, but I could be wrong.

The wheel bearing angle is interesting. It doesn't sound like other bad wheel bearings I've had (grinding, popping, etc), but it should be very easy to check; jack the rear end up and wiggle the tire. Any looseness would mean a bad wheel bearing. I'll check next weekend.

I jacked the car up this weekend and checked out the rear bearings. Both wheels are tight, no play whatsoever, smooth operation, no popping or symptoms of bearing failure.

Have any of you who have your volts in the shop for this issue had any progress?

I did the same. Nothing.

I have another theory, but it requires me taking the wheel off, which I haven't gotten around to yet. When I first got the car I was at the dealer multiple times for a clunk sound when the parking brake was engaged. From what I understand they've added sleeves and grommets to fix the issue, which it did. I'm wondering if the reason I can't find anything under the car that could make the noise if the sound is actually from the cable slapping something when loose. I'd be surprised if it was. Still sounds like a bad shock but they replaced that shock so I don't know how it would be.

Not sure if that is the sound I'm hearing. I already adjusted the two hatch adjusters, and it didn't help. If you adjust them so that they are snug against the frame it probably wouldn't make a difference whether the rivets were loose, since there would be no play once adjusted.

So, did you tighten the spoiler somehow, and did it fix the clunking sound?

Don't want to mess with it myself. My luck I'll overtighten and break something. Waiting for my VA to call me back first.

Did you try wiggling your spoiler?

My spoiler is tight. Just a slight clicking on the right side when pushing up and down, but probably not enough to exhibit a loud enough clunk to cause what I'm hearing inside. With the potholes I've been hitting, due to the extreme cold and snowstorms, I should be getting clunks in other parts of the car soon enough!

Unfortunately my spoiler is tight; no noise when I try moving it. My sound appears to come from the rear suspension.
