Had my 2014 Volt for 3 months now. We finally got some rain in Santa Cruz, CA. Driving in this AM, I could hardly see due to windshield not defogging. Any suggestions. I had defrost on but it still was very hard to see. I have installed a cabin filter- could this be the reason.

Best trick is to make sure that Auto-recirculate is not enabled, and that outside air is being used. Corresponds to both of the circulate buttons on the right being Blue, and not green. Lots of people complained early on until someone posted this trick and how well it worked. It was a "duh" moment for many of us. ;)

And of course have Defrost turned on, or a temperature set that is cold enough to have A/C running with some air going at the windshield.

I usually use the defrosters and crack a window. Clears up quick.

I have this happen as well. Once it's set to defog, A/C should be on automatically. Make sure the heat is up a good amount too. What happens to me after a rain, like this morning for example, is the outside of the windshield gets fogged up, and I have to run the sprayers and wipers until it clears, while also running defog with plenty of heat. It looks no different than when the inside fogs up. Peninsula humidity can be quite a nuisance.

If I hit auto and the windshield defog button, it has always cleared for me. Your filter will definitely reduce airflow, so that may be causing an issue. There is a setting in the config menu for setting fan speed to high when on auto. Try that. Also manually turn the fan up if you can't feel the flow with your hand.

Also try the wipers in case it is on the outside. Defog will clear outside fogging in most conditions, but it may be slower.

There is an Auto-Defog setting in the Config menu that sometimes gets turned off by people trying to maximize electric range. Sounds like it should be on in your case. This setting is in addition to the Auto climate control.

Also consider RainX anti-fog or another similar cleaner.

I agree that turning off recirculate can help in some circumstances. Nonetheless, I've found windshield fogging to be a particularly vexing issue in my Volt.

I bought one of these to make it easy to physically reach/wipe the parts of the windshield that aren't within easy reach: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0017K69MA/ref=pe_385040_121528360_TE_dp_1

Rainx and poke the button for more air on the window works for me the few times the auto setting get overloaded.

Pre-heating with auto start may help as well.

Along the lines of RainX, I was contemplating using something I got with the last pair of glasses I got to keep the lenses from fogging. It comes in a small pump-spray bottle and I was thinking of applying it right after the next time I clean the window.

One aggravating factor is that whatever you do, if you run the HVAC the AC will run and it will pump condensate into the ventilation system.

I discuss it here;- http://gm-volt.com/forum/showthread.php?260009-HVAC-totally-stupid-design but everyone simply replied saying how completely amazing the Volt is. Sorry... it isn't. The HVAC and its functionality are badly designed.
