Hi, we got a 2017, and are really pleased at how improved it is over the previous generation which we liked a lot. But one thing-where is the compass? My wife makes home calls and likes to use this to orient herself. Is it only with navigation (which we didn't bother spending for)? Or how do we access it? I couldn't find this in the manual or online...

The compass is displayed (in front of steering wheel) along with speed as the 3rd selection of the Driver Information Center (DIC) Information Display Options. Look-Up "DIC Information Display Options, DIC Information Displays, Compass and Speed" in the Owners Manual for step by step directions in how to get the compass to display along with the speed. A Compass will also display as part of built in NAV on the Infotainment Display if you have the Navigation Option.

page 100 of the manual: the compass uses the GPS system. If you don't have navigation you don't have GPS.
Not true. The Volt has GPS that is used for location based charging, OnStar navigation, the MyChevrolet app find my car feature and the directional compass on the driver information center display regardless of whether your Volt has the optional built in navigation system.
