Does anyone know what the function is of the little slot cut in the rear bumper just below the trunk latch? I peeked at a Gen1 in the parking lot and they don't have it.

I was trying to find the best way to hold the hatch down in the event that I have something too big too close it and I just noticed this hole!

I have attached a photo.

The slot is for drainage of any water that collects.

It's a hidden coin slot for saving money. You are supposed to put in 4 quarters each time you drive it; you know, kind of like a video game. This is to remind you of how much money you are saving and not sending to the oil sheiks.

NOPE.
It's the piggy bank feature !
To save for that Tesla a penny at a time. I only need about 9 million pennies, right?

You push the grit on the back of your Volt down thru there, and it sits on a jute fiber tray that gets shaken as you drive, and when the day is done, you check the tray for how much gold you collected.
