Well, my VW Beetle had metal inside door frames with an inset plastic-wrapped fiberboard panel. Maybe they are simply paying homage to their heritage...The ID4 a good looking vehicle and seems to be well put together. However, it's still a bit austere on the inside and some of the trim feels a bit cheap for a $40K-$50K vehicle.
Take a look at the inside door frames for example. Could VW spend a couple of bucks to cover and trim the bare metal door frame for this $40K to $50K car?
Look at a Volt's door trim compared to a VW ID4. Granted it's a minor detail but subtle details do make a difference!
Pretty sure I read that VW is doing just that, taking the VW, adding a few upgrades, badging it an Audi and selling it for way more. So Audis are technically Volkswagens but at a much higher price. Most parts are shared between the two brands, the vehicles sit on shared chassis. Of course VW and Toyota are not alone in this game. Look at the (initially) $75k Volt called the Cadillac ELRDemonstably a good business model. Toyota has made billions in profits building a Camry with leather seats and gold trim and convincing the proles they're buying a Lexus.

Except VW has the $7500 tax credit advantage. If that gets restored for Tesla and GM ...Just read that VW is going to build a $35,000, smaller battery, ID4 in the States. They are going to have to do better than that if they are competing against the $30,000 EV Equinox with Ultium technology.
