Awesome. Surprised the Model S didn't get the designation. It got great numbers and has automatic front breaking.

The safety of the Volt is another reason I replaced my 2003 Civic Hybrid with a 2016 Volt. It is another under-appreciated aspect of the superior Volt engineering. You don't have to drive an enormous vehicle to have a high level of safety.

Actually, per the article title, it's the only US made car to receive the IIHS Top Safety Pick +. Other US cars got the Top Safety Pick sans plus, such as Ford Fusion and the Chevy Malibu, but do not have good or acceptable headlight ratings to meet the qualifications for a plus rating.

To qualify for 2017 TOP SAFETY PICK+, a vehicle must earn good ratings in the five crashworthiness tests, an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention and an acceptable or good headlight rating.
