Volkswagen kicks off EV awareness campaign

A new ad from Electrify America features six automakers' EV models.

Volkswagen's Electrify America subsidiary has put out a commercial that aims to spread awareness of electric vehicles and how far the industry has progressed, Reuters reports. The ad is part of a $45 million public education initiative. "We're trying to say with this campaign that electric vehicles are fun to drive, the range is great and charging is more widely available than people know," Richard Steinberg, Electrify America's senior director of green cities, marketing and communications, told Reuters.

The commercial uses two familiar cartoons to make a point about EVs over standard vehicles. In the ad, you see a man in an orange car stopped at a red light while the Flintstones theme song plays. Then a man in an orange Chevy Bolt drives up to the light while the Jetsons theme takes over. Once the light turns green, the man in the Chevy Bolt drives away, leaving the other man behind, while a speaker says, "With instant acceleration, electric cars are more fun to drive and more affordable than ever. Electric cars are here." The message from the education campaign, dubbed Plug Into The Present, is "Say goodbye to the Stone Age."

This is the type of advertising GM needs to be doing. I just wish they hadn't done orange on orange as it makes relatively easy to get confused and think the ICE is leaving the EV behind at the stop light.

Anyone besides me realize the ICE is an older, debaged Subaru?

Interesting that the Bolt wasn't debadged. That means GM gave them the OK to use it, perhaps even paying VW to feature it.
Yep - with Subaru's "green" advertising they probably didn't want the world to realize their cars aren't particularly "green".

Someone in GM marketing is now asking, "Why are we allowing the Bolt to be advertised?" :-(

To which another person replies. "You're such a noob! We can't make enough of them to make it worth it. Now, let's get back to figuring out how we can convince people that sedans are for wimps and manly men drive pick-ups. We have Colorados to sell!"

It's so great that's Volkswagen spending money marketing EVs in accordance with their $2B settlement.

Is it part of the settlement or are they prepping the world for their EV's. I find it slightly ironic they have to feature a Chevy because they don't have one of their own to sell.

I don't think people need to be convinced to buy pickup trucks. A lot of us here own them, myself included. A few of us even haul stuff in them. I do.

I could swear I saw an E-Golf in there ahead of the Clarity and Leaf.
