They've abandoned the car production, not the name. I'm sure they still have it under copywrite even if they are not currently using it. Seems to close (possibility of general public confusion). I wouldn't be surprised if GM took them to court if money hasn't changed hands.

April fools jokes are released April 1. Pretty easy unless you are VW marketing. Release the rebranding news on March 30, then confirm it's true. Later claim it's an April fools joke that wasn't on April 1st. And their diesel engine exhaust cures health ailments...
