<i>“GM has nearly given up pushing the car in national ad campaigns”</i> -- from "<b>Next gen Volt will be shown January in Detroit</b>," 8/8/14.

And this is the real nub, isn't it?

Is there any way that we the owners can take the (non-GM-affiliated) offensive to promote the Volt? Perhaps we could come up with our own viral ads. What do you guys think?

Those here who are good at

–Video
–Editing
–Copy
–Presentation
–PowerPoint (or other slide generating tool)

… could take stabs at viral ads, we could vote on them, and then make a YouTube channel. Perhaps several could cooperate on one ad. They could make contact with each other via private messaging, or here.

I'd suggest that all content be original (no GM-sourced pics, charts, etc) to prevent any legal protest.

I have an idea of an AD: an image of the battery level going down to zero, people screaming while in the background the music of Jaws is playing, and then the ICE kicks in and the image changes to showing the road driving the Volt. The AD ends with a voice saying : No stress if you are out of battery. Chevy Volt ! What do you think about this, guys ?

I like the idea of a volt owner talking about being a 95 percenter and talking about the 1 percenters like they were referring to income/wealth only to finally say they are 95 percent off of gas and then to revolt against the one percenters ( gas guzzlers/users )

I always thought this was a great true story from a gm-volt member:

At the time of this anecdote, I had the car for a year and a half and had just under 15 000 miles on the car. At this point I had been to the gas station once to gas up (took it home new from the dealer with a full tank).

The last time I put gas into my Volt was March of this year; I put in 20$ of the smelly stuff. We were coming off my a painful renovation (I know, aren't they all?). My wife and I were joking about how the kids knew all about Lowe's and Home Depot and drywall and insulation and all that stuff as we were on our way back from my 8 year old daughter's ballet lesson, wife and 4 year old son in tow. I mutter to my wife that I was going to pull into the happy, smiley Esso Station (Exxon in the U.S.).

I pull in and stop the vehicle and proceed to unlatch my seatbelt, at which point my 4 year old, as he looked around quite confused, asked me, "Daddy, what is this store. What do they sell here?"

My wife and I looked at each other and shared a look of joy and bewilderment. There was a long pause during which I debated, "Do I answer this one, or do I sweep it under the rug?" Before I could figure it out, my eight year old goes on to explain to him that the Volt runs mostly on electricity but needs gas once in a while.

To go viral the video has to be exceptionally funny, cute or bizarre, or all three. Not the normal blah blah the volt is great cause .... Not sure what that is but I know there are not many viral videos that feature cars. Could we get a cute baby driving a volt maybe.
The Volt, a car that does not need gas to drive it, but can use gas when you need. How to make that message viral is the key.

I thought this recent Nissan sentra commercial had Volt written all over it

Jackson, would you be looking for more of an informational video?
I don't see how we can avoid some informational content. People know next to nothing about the Volt, or even that it exists. Making a spot viral is the difficult part. Maybe one really good viral (cute / funny) ad could redirect with a click to a channel or site with the slightly more boring spots.

Like it too. Reminds me of when at our cabin the land line was having issues so I asked my 14 year old to pick up the phone and see if he could hear the dial tone. Having only ever used cell phones he had *no* idea what I was talking about and what it would sound like.

I may help on this matter. I was thinking already to make Volt ads and put them on my different sites. I feel it's ridiculous that this car is not advertised as it should be. Here in Québec, I never saw a Volt ad and the only reference to an hybrid was with the Lexus SUV, which is not even pluggable.

good luck with this. I think it is a wonderful idea.. Don't forget the highest consumer satisfaction 2 years in a row,, a $35,000 car beating out $100,000 + cars. thee has to be something there.
