The United Kingdom will ban the sale of new combustion-engine vehicles by 2030, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced today. It will also ban the sale of new hybrid cars by 2035. Johnson made the announcement tonight as part of a new ten-point plan for a “green industrial revolution.”

Such morons. Until the electricty you use to drive is 100% green also, you are just pushing the pollution from your tailpipe to the smokestack at the generation facility. That side of the equation is waaaaay behind the cards.

Seems like an opportunity to invest in other energy sources.

California's time limit is 2035

(US Numbers here)

It's far easier to clean up 8,000 point sources of pollution (number of fossil fuel power plants in the US in 2017) than it is to clean up 150-200 million point sources of pollution (estimated vehicles registered in the US).

Depends on whether you are living in places like the USA or Uganda, etc. Case in point, British Columbia's electricity is 95% hydro with the next hundred years expected demand to be met when Cite C comes on line in 2025, Manitoba's electricity is 97% hydro and it sells its excess to Saskatchewan (for those that don't know, Manitoba is basically flat), The province of Prince Edward Island gets 97% of it's electricity from wind power. Renewables are the cheapest form of electricity unless your oil and gas companies are heavily subsidized by your government (that's another word for your tax dollars) which is taken away from your educational and health budgets. There is no longer any excuse for burning oil and gas to make electricity.

The difference is that you CAN clean up generation. And when you do, every car that was using that dirty old electricity INSTANTLY is using the shiny clean electricity without changing a single thing. If someone has a dirty burner car, 9,999,999 out of 10,000,000 it stays a dirty burner car no matter what you do to the power plant.

As you point out, as power plants get cleaner so do EV's. Even old EV's. Chances are the the gas burner will never get cleaner as they age, instead they will get dirtier. This is why many states employ EPA testing of cars, to catch the ones failing exhaust criteria as they age.

Ignoring the methane that is many times worse than CO2 for global warming, over 100,000 tons of horse manure and 10 million gallons of urine had to be disposed of in New York city per year. That's one city that was much smaller 140 years ago. Makes today's pollution seem miniscule. No horses are not pollution free.

Many EV enthusiast bigots forget that the internal combustion engine is actually less polluting than the horse, which it replaced.
