Transmission Replaced 2017 Volt

2017 Volt 2 weeks old with 1100 Kilometers (Canada). Car operation had been normal. After coming to a stop car would only move about 1 foot. Check engine light on. Car towed to dealer. Dealer advised that GM was sending a new transmission. 16 days later car is repaired. The work order shows 3 codes:
P079A--00--Transmission Clutch 1 Slip Detected
P079B--00--Transmission Clutch 2 Slip Detected
P0AC4--00--Hybrid Powertrain Control Module Request MIL
The dealer gave us a loaner Volt to drive during the repair.
After all this I can't believe I still really like the Volt.

Wow that is really unfortunate to have such an early major item failure. Maybe since it was so new it is a sign it was a defect from factory. I'm sure a small number of any mass produced part will have a defect. If we see more posts here with similar results perhaps there is an actual problem but for now I hope it was a one off and you stay trouble free going forward.
I wish owners who report major issues also provide a bit of basic info on their vehicle like the last 6 of their VIN or at least the date of manufacture as posted on the door label. This is important because it could mean vehicles built around yours could be afflicted with the same issues.

My 2017 was built in June 2016, when was yours?
My tranny was replaced in Dec/15. During the drive to Florida the CEL went on, local GM dealer (never seen a G2 yet) investigated with help of GM mother ship said that a sensor went off in the tranny, but they had no procedure yet to change it so they shipped a whole tranny down for replacement. GM Also wanted my tranny back to investigate the issue as this was the first instance. Took the tech a whole week to do the work because the engine cradle had to come completely out of the car. I had to take it back a couple of time after for some post work issues ( broken EGR valve, front suspension issues, etc). That was a $10k bill for GM.

Not sure if this work was a factor in my power Inverter failure ( shift the park, loss of propulsion, aka F2 module ) that happened on the way back from Florida ( this module sits on top of the tranny). There is a whole thread on this incident labeled "My G2 dead on the road". Think I was one of the first to have this issue as well. Here is the link http://gm-volt.com/forum/showthread.php?234258-My-G2-dead-on-the-road

Since then all is well, only been in for software updates and an oil

I wonder what it counts as a "clutch slip". Sometimes after I stop, my car will jerk a bit the next time I accelerate. It feels like it starts to take off, then jerks into what feels like Neutral for just a split second, then snaps back into acceleration.

When this happens in CS mode, it's far more exaggerated...one time I started to take off and it jerked mildly a couple times and then completely stopped accelerating for about a full second until it started the engine and then everything was fine. This has never thrown any codes though, and it doesn't happen very often...did yours do anything like this?
Last 6 digits of VIN is 129406 date of manufacture 8/16

I do recall similar "jerk a bit" symptoms a few times previous to the final break down. I thought it may have been wheel slippage on wet road. The loaner Volt never had any "clutch slip" for the 16 days we drove it. So far the new transmission is working perfectly.

Hopefully my symptoms don't lead to needing a transmission replacement...at that point I'm going to ask GM to buy my car back and I'll get a RAV4 hybrid.

Other people on the forum have experienced this too so maybe it's just something that happens, like the exhaust afterfire...

Unfortunately I had a transmission failure even before I drove or took delivery of the car —2018 manufactured March 15, 2018.

They’ve had the car now almost two weeks to swap in a transmission and reading the above stories makes me very nervous about module failures or the like and nervous about actually accepting this car, given that I’m sure they had to rip the engine cradle out as noted above.

I’m just afraid what’s going to happen as a result of having them do all that disassembly.

I’ve already put in a call to GM asking at a minimum about them giving me an extended warranty, but I’m even wondering whether that is enough or if I should just tell them to forget the sale at this point and return my money. I would take a replacement.

GM customer service merely said we have to wait for them to complete the repair and then we’ll talk. Again, I don’t have a whole lot of confidence at this point, given how intricate this car is. This is not like replacing a transmission in a ‘69 Nova.

On the other hand, I’ve read a couple other stories on this board about people having the transmission replaced, and it’s been OK. It’s just very concerning in a complex but brand new car that had 7 miles on the odometer before this happened.

Fortunately this is not my first experience with a generation 2. We have 2 16s which have been fine and have been from the beginning.

Good thing that this is not my first Volt.

Getting car today finally. Waiting to hear on whether they will extend the warranty.

They did extend it to 5 years/100k b2b, so they stepped up on it and I’m satisfied with that. Got that nice email notice from GM just hours before they announced the Volt was discontinued.

I also received an extended warranty from GM. So far, after 21,000 kilometers, the car has had zero issues.

Unless you are on slippery roads where traction control might cause that, that doesn't sound right. I'd take mine in if it was doing that. My 2017 has never done that once in 10,000 miles. That's one major advantage of EVs: smooth acceleration and jerking like that would really bother me!

Similar problem with my Chevy Volt 2017. Only 38000 miles. Dead in middle of the road late night. Got it towed to Chevy dealer. They found transmission goes bad and need to be replaced. Good enough it’s covered under warranty. But I don’t have extended warranty and this makes me nervous. 38000 miles is not lot. I see too many red flags in here for Chevy Volt. I’m thinking they should buy it back and give me new car. If they don’t I might have to consult a lawyer and go from there. I can’t be driving this car on highway and suddenly car comes to a stop. This is how you get run over!

This is exactly what it was doing for me. Thanks for describing the problem. Same issue. For me transmission went bad and they’re replacing it.
My 2017 volt has 23,500 miles on it. Only 700+ miles on the engine. The ECL came on with a P1AEE check code. Dealer says transmission needs to be replaced. Thankfully the Voltec warranty covered the repair. I will ask for an extension on my Voltec and GMPP warranties and go from there..

This happens all the time if stopped on a hill. There is Gen 2 setting to automatically apply emergency brake hold, when I hit the gas on a hill I get a 'surge' as you have described. Not sure if it also does on flat, I don't think so. I've played with turning it off, but I ended up putting it back on after I understood what that resistance/surge was. It's actually helpful.
