During my recent 1200km trip from picking up my used 2012 Volt (lease transfer), I noticed that part way home the engine light came on. I pulled over and contacted OnStar who provided me with the P0016 (or P0017 cant remember which one) code and indicated that I could continue my trip, but to report to my local dealer after completing the journey. So I continued my trip (almost all of it on the generator). The car seamed to performed normally (although I am a new Volt owner). Upon arriving home I noticed that the car was leaking oil, and it must have been happening for a good part of the trip as with the highway speeds, oil drippings where happening all over the under body, and there was a oily build up on the back of the car and tail lights. Went to my local dealer within a hour of arriving home, and they got the two codes from the car(P0016 P0017). Check the oil level in the generator and although down it still had enough to operate. Car was booked in for service.

Service was performed and I was told that both Cam Shafts were incorrectly aligned, there was no damage to the timing chain or teeth, and the alignment was now corrected. The cars service history was examined and it did show that the car was brought in for an engine light service with the previous owner. My local dealer could only surmise that the cam shafts were incorrectly aligned from that service and since the previous owner drove almost exclusively on battery the issue did not come up again until I got into my extended trip taking the car home. The leaking oil I was told was unrelated, just a cracked gasket was causing the problem (about 2 litres were lost).

One other note, the car was in the shop for a total of 4.5 business days, there was a 1 day delay as the serpentine belt was lost by the courier between Lansing MI and Kitchener (a second had to be ordered). Apparently in order to get to the timing chain this belt has to be cut off, so a new belt is required each time.

Happy to report the car is operating fine at this point (but I have been on all battery since), I plan on going on two extended trips shortly (a 150km and a 500km run) to use the generator and see if anything happens out of the ordinary. All repairs were performed under warranty, and I was told that even if the 3 year warranty was up, the power train warranty would have covered these repairs as well.

Thought I would share these codes and the experience with the forum for the future use of others.

Glad you weren't stranded and your dealer found and fixed the problem. Is your Volt still on the B2B warranty or was this covered by the power train warranty?

Cheers

My Volt is still under the B2B warranty for another 8 months, as to what the dealer classified it as and reported it to GM I am unsure (I did not ask them that question).

Interesting. I'm sorry to see your introduction to Volt ownership is not as positive as it might have been. My car is just back from yet another 1200 km round trip (Brampton - Timmins) with no issues ever, and I'm sure that will be your experience from here on.

A couple of things have me wondering if this is not just poor initial assembly of the ICE. The cams should not go out of alignment, especially with no damage to the timing chain or gears. If it throws those codes, perhaps the sensor is correct and just reflecting the timing being off, and at some point the code was just cleared with no remedial action. And the serpentine belt having to be cut off? I've never heard of that.

There are much more knowledgeable people on here, perhaps one of them will chime in. (WOT?)

The belt is a "stretch belt" meaning there is no tensioner. Maybe it's different with the volt, but I've changed several stretch belts on other vehicles (ford fiesta, some bmws) and there is a special tool to remove and install them. Never had to cut one to remove it. It's essentially just a "ramp" to guide/force the belt off and on. You disable the ignition and turn the crank by hand with a wrench with this tool to ramp the belt off and on.

There are two reasons I can theorize to cause the problems. 1. The sensors are different and were replaced, but fit in the wrong position. 2. The timing chain had a problem or a tensioner noise/failure and the cams were not properly aligned before the covers were replaced. The code would need two key cycles to set(warmup and engine cooldown) so the tech cleared them and released the car.

i have a 2011 chevy volt with 209k miles on it i had the timing chain replaced due to the p0016 and 17 codes and im still getting the same codes i have changed both cam sensors and i made sure the oil was filled up i tried changing the crankshaft sensor and the car sounded horrible so i cleaned and put the old sensor back in it. i have ordered both intake and exhaust actuators i think they are called thats behind the vvt i dont know what else to try to get the code to stay off mind you i have only had the car for a month now
