It works on the Gen 1 cars with the iPhone and there is no reason why it shouldn't work on a Gen 2 car. There is a setting on the phone that you have to change in Bluetooth for the car. See if I can find it...
If the iPhone is configured correctly you get a message on the screen that you have a text and a tone is played. Did you set up your phone as in the link I posted earlier? It is possible to reply to a text via voice to text recognition via Siri.Does your car even alert you that you received a text message? On my iPhone the text message alerts go away completely when it's connected to the car via Bluetooth. Phone calls come in fine but no sound plays for text messages so I have to constantly just look at my phone to see if I have any new messages.
