Tesla Solar Hit With Layoffs, Home Depot Deals Ends, 14 Sites Closing

“In effect they seem to be saying, ‘We have no strategy for selling solar,’” said Frank Gillett, an analyst at Forrester Research, adding that the SolarCity purchase “looks pretty awful right now.”

Tesla Solar installations:

  • 2017-Q1: 150 MW
  • 2017-Q2: 176 MW
  • 2017-Q3: 109 MW
  • 2017-Q4: 87 MW (down 47% year-over-year)
  • 2018-Q1: 76 MW (down 49% year-over-year)

Up to this point Solar City been re-selling Chinese solar panels (Trina / Yingli) that got nothing against Sunpower / LG solar panels. Until Solar City gets their Buffalo, NY solar city factor going, and hopefully produces good quality American made solar panels, in cooperation with Panasonic - their is nothing special solar city offers. To be more specific I would not have touched those panels from efficiency point of view, and they were ugly, and made in China where there has been a lot of reliability issues...Just saw their new Panasonic solar panel advertisement in Home Depot - no specs - 8 cell sub panel display - not bad looking. Hopefully efficiency is above 20%. Time will tell if those will sell.
Tesla Solar Roof Tiles are cool - but still no specs available on them, and given the cost they only apply to a very small household market.

As I read it some months ago, Panasonic is the one taking over in Buffalo. Tesla will get Panasonic's output, maybe, and only for certain things (probably those solar tiles). Kinda like how the gigafactory works in Nevada.

Not through Home Depot they won't. That deal was canceled, per the article.
