Hamburg (ots) - charge of consumer deception and unfair competition / Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA) examines the case
The US automaker Tesla is suspected of having illegally stolen government subsidies in Germany. This reports How To Cars in the current issue 48/2017 (EVT: 1.12.2017). Background: With a new registration of a purely electrically operated vehicle motorists can apply for an environmental bonus of 4,000 euros. Half of the amount is paid by the car manufacturers and the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA). So that customers receive the environmental bonus, the price of the basic vehicle model must be less than 60,000 euros net - then they get the state subsidy even with higher-priced versions of the same car model. This is the case with the Model S 75D from Tesla - but then missing important extras such as rear view camera, lane departure warning and parking sensors. These can be bought as a comfort package for 13,101 euros gross - allegedly optional. But How To Cars research revealed: The model S 75D is not available without these extras.
To check that, an How To Cars test buyer anonymously ordered the basic model without comfort package online. A Tesla customer service representative then calls him and tells him that the Model S 75D is not available without extras. The basic model is all about "taking the environmental bonus". The editors also report on customers who have experienced similar things. Either Tesla canceled the orders of the Model S 75D without extras or the car was delivered at the base price - but with comfort features.
How To Cars suspected: Tesla does not build the base model without extras. Thus, the allegations of unfair competition and consumer delusion in the room - and the pressure on Tesla increases. Through the AUTO BILD research BAFA has become aware of the case and announces to examine this extensively. In the end, the Model S could be removed from the list of eligible cars.
