I was parked with the car on today and I was going through the Settings menus. Under Vehicle/Collision settings I saw a sub menu about Pedestrian Avoidance. I clicked this entry and there were 4 options that were all grayed out. When I backed out of this menu and tried to access it again, it was gone. The entire Pedestrian category just disappeared. I had just driven to work and was in the parking lot, so I know i wasn't asleep/dreaming. Has anyone seen this before???

I have seen the Pedestrian Avoidance screen appear once or twice. I don't know why it appears but maybe it is a future safety feature that has not yet been implemented or one that is required for certain non-US markets.

Kind of crummy that they want to charge a couple of hundred dollars when it's already there and just needs to be unlocked via a software update! I remember having Sony camcorders where all the features were built in to every model but were simply disabled on the cheaper models. I guess it's cheaper to just manufacture one circuit board with all the stuff on it and charge more for models that have some features unlocked.

The Bolt has a similar (if not the same) radar as an ACC Volt but for some reason doesn't have ACC, while the Volt gets ACC but no pedestrian detection...my suspicion being that they were working on pedestrian detection but ran out of time

My friend has the Malibu hybrid and it has the Pedestrian Avoidance. I picture of a person lights up on his dash when pedestrians are detected. I've never seen this on the Volt, but the Collision Avoidance does go off when a person walks in front of the car.

No, it doesn't. The radar unit in the Volt is visible as a separate Bowtie emblem in the front grille, the Bolt has no such separate emblem.
I don't think the different bowtie emblem itsself is the radar unit. The radar unit is hidden inside the grill behind the emblem. They changed the emblem probably because the original one caused interference. The unit could be installed in a different vehicle without having a bowtie emblem over it.

I looked in my '17 settings and saw this too. It was greyed out so you couldn't select any of the options and when I tried to re-enter that menu it was gone. (BTW I have ACC with the split front emblem segment too)

Are you saying the Volt has two bowtie emblems? Did I miss something?
No, it doesn't have two emblems on the front, but on ACC-equipped Volts you can see that the Bowtie is on a cutout piece that isn't part of the rest of the grille. I assume that this is to allow that particular piece to emit and receive the radar pulses, perhaps because it's more transparent at those wavelengths.

The bowtie on the front looks just like the one on the back. On the grill there is a rectangular cutout though. If the Volt is anything like some other brands, that is more likely the ACC sensor.
