Looking at the cruise I couldn't help but notice the side mirrors sticking out. How much do these things hurt fuel economy? and wouldn't it pay to use a camera/LCD system? Those components are getting cheaper every day.
I think that the DOT requires mirrors and will not allow video as a substitute. A mirror is more reliable than a camera [sun shining into the lens can wipe out the image, there could be a lag with near to far focus and light to dark exposure settings with the auto focus, auto exposure camera]and distance measurement is better. I have had a back up cameras in my last two cars and I still do not feel comfortable I am not going to hit something when backing up
PS Have you driven a car with a back up camers? A few drops of water on the back up camera will wipe out the image, but a few drops of water is no big thing with a mirror
