yes -- there's an option to set your "home" location, and the car realizes via GPS when you are home and will automatically charge at 12A without having to mess with any settings.

Look in your manual under the charging or "home charging" topic.

Better yet, get an L2 EVSE so you never have to select that option AND completely drained batteries get 4-5 hour charge times. If you have a gen2, there's also an adapter that will make your EVSE handle 240V, but at 12a for 5-6 hour charge times.

Yup I use my stock gen2 EVSE to charge at Level 2 speeds, from 0% to 100% in right around 5 hours. I wired up my own dedicated 240V circuit for my little semi automated charging solution: (skip to 15 seconds to see it in action)

For first generation, no.
Best option is 240 for both simplicity of use and faster/more efficient charging.

blimo, I was wondering the same, and it took me several minutes to find it in the manual- but it is on page 127 under the section "location based charging". The manual is confusing in its arrangement of where to find things. Even the index isn't that much help for certain questions, as I've discovered!

Does anyone know the CAN message ID for the 12A option? It is a huge pet peeve of mine as well and I'd love to make a little adapter that always defaults to 12A even when not at home. Is there a list somewhere of all Chevy Volt CAN Messages?

Always defaulting to 12A would be unsafe especially if you don't know what else could be plugged into that circuit.
