After my 2013 Volt suddenly shut down and stranded me, only to find out there were 2 major software updates no one informed me about, I began to feel there is a need for a place for owners to report software bugs, weird behaviors and other issues from annoying to catastrophic. Since the major software update we have had the display blank out and had to restart the car to bring it back, the fan speed control would only go slower and not faster until the car was turned off and on again, and today the car started out with dynamic engine braking and would not go back to normal coasting until shut off and on again. It is starting to feel like a Microsoft PC. But, with 10 million lines of code (more than a 787 Dreamliner), it is not surprising for bugs to show up. Is this the only forum to report them? GM really needs a "Bug Report" button on their website.

Wow never heard of someone having as many software issues as yourself. The only software bug I have is every few months my centre stack will freeze (every thing still continues to work) but a shut down and restart after a few minutes clears it with no issues.

Do you have a check engine light? If so have you pushed the Onstar button in your car to run a remote diagnostic? It certainly sounds like there is something else going on in your car.

If you have this many problems after 2 major software updates what kind of problems did you have before the updates? As far as more lines of code than a Dreamliner, I'd like to know who is counting all the lines.

My 2012 will occasionally hiccup but will reset when turned off for a few minutes. The symptoms vary and include reduced power and lo ss of power steering. Key is leaving it turned off for a 5-10 minutes rather than a short on-off-on cycle...to get a clean re-boot. Usually I get hicups only after input errors such as off then on while changing gears, etc.

Sounds like you have some other problem, not a software bug. A software bug (bad code) would be repeatable and show up in all the cars with the same software version and firmware. If the dealer is looking at it as a software code problem they may be looking in the wrong place. With this many issues, it sounds more like memory or some other computer hardware component causing flakey behavior. What is the servicing dealer telling you?

AND some updates are only available if you ARE having a problem.

Never apply a patch unless your system is showing symptoms that the patch fixes.

This car sounds like it was chipped badly. I'd have the dealer flash it back to factory.

My 2012 built in Aug 2011 and I've experienced no electrical bugs, glitches or hiccups. Since you took it to a dealer for the updates, I suggest you contact a Volt Advisor and ask them to investigate what the dealer did and if there is something else that needs to or can be done to make your car right.

BTW what did the dealer record on you receipts. Maybe if you post up the exact text other's here can help.

Good luck.

Volt Advisors please contact the OP and his servicing dealer to see what they did to his car. This could be dangerous. I fear his dealer screwed something up and please post what you find to help others.

Not necessarily true. Software bugs which induce race conditions can be deterministic and depend on other activities in the system, temp, timing of requestes etc. If one part is a bid different in time, but maybe still within spec, such race condition based problems can be far more common in one system than another.

That being said, bad memory, flash or other is still very likely cause.

But the OPs request for "bug report" is a good idea.. without detailed reports its even harder to track them down.

Neromanceres, I had the same problem you just described yesterday, and yes a shut down and restart cleared the problem. Do you have any ideas what may have triggered the event, or did GM indicate they have a software fix for you?

The only thing I had done is plug in my Garmin GPS in, and was wondering if the GPS might be the trigger.

But it should be noted that there is a difference between a "patch" and a general point issue update.
One should keep up with the general updates.

And I'm not sure I agree with that flat statement anyway.
Some fix really important safety conditions that only occur under obscure circumstances.

I think I trust the engineers at GM to recommend which "patches" should be universally applied and which not.

Austine42,

Sorry to hear about your experience so far. If you could please PM me the last 8 of your VIN and the best way for you to be reached. I would like to have your Dedicated Advisor involved.

Thank you,
