Hi,

My Voltec spx J1772 failed, the head is loose and I thought I might as well swap for a 25 feet non-coiled J1772. When my part came in it has 4 leads and I'm confused as to how to install it. As anyone done this?

Any help is greatly appreciated. If all else fails, I'll have to buy a new L2 charger which I'm hoping to avoid.

Thanks!

At least for the 4 wire J1772 cable:

Green=Ground
White= Neutral/L2
Black=L1
Blue=Control/Pilot

The issue is probably not the cable. There are no active components in the cable or plug. Hopefully some else will chime in on the internal connections. Maybe they are labeled on the board?

I'd presume the 5th wire has to do with the light on the handle. Maybe you could identify which wire is for the light by leaving the original cable attached, disconnecting one wire at a time, then seeing if the light still works(?). (My guess is one of the two smaller wires. Although you'd have to be careful... more than one wire could deactivate the light but not be EXCLUSIVELY for the light.)

As for matching the other wires, edk-Austin seems right. But did the new cable not come any kind of wiring diagram or wire color description?

White Black Green = Red Black Green

Grey with Purple stripe is supposed to be the LED

Black with Purple stripe is supposed to be the pilot signal which would connect to blue.

Source:
My charger was torn off the car when parked in a garage. Rather than shell out 400 for a new kit, I bought a replacement J1772 cord for 100$ and plug from Leviton. Built a wiring block to test the correct color coding of wires for the splice (called Leviton who could not "officially" tell me the correct splice) and also trolled these forums. When I was finished I had a charger cable 2x as long that works like a charm. Discovered the following is the correct splice and charges the car:

Levitron to VOLTEC

Green to Green
Black to Black
Red to White
Blue - DO NOT CONNECT
Orange to Black w Purple Stripe

leaving...Grey with Purple stripe for VOLTEC. DO NOT CONNECT.

The Grey with Purple stripe is used for the LED light on the former charger plug. The Levitron plug does not come with a light.
If you connect the BLUE to Grey/Purple the VOLTEC charger will give you green lights but will not charge the car! I found this out the hard way completing the splice only to have to go back and figure out why it was not charging.

Thanks for the info on the 5th wire. Now I'm confused about L1/L2

OLD = NEW
square Black w Purple Stripe = blue
circle blue = do not connect
L1 Red = Black
L2 Black = White
Grd Green = green

Or because it's 220v it doesn't matter if L1 and L2 swap position? I would think that Black = Black and Red = white. But per Edk-austin comment it suggests otherwise.

Because you're wiring 240VAC to the Voltec, L1/L2 actually don't matter, both are hot.
Per J1772 standard pin 1 of the J1772 plug is the L1 Hot line, whereas pin 2 is the neutral (for L1 mode), and L2 hot phase for L2 mode. So you have two hot phases.

Thank you Ed for confirming the 2 hots. I'll wire it up tomorrow.

Thanks everyone for your help! I was able to swap the cable out and didn't use the second lead from the left.
