We have a 2012 Volt with 141k miles and has been a gem. Had been noticing some clunking noise when beginning to accelerate, typically on an incline grade. Had replaced axle shaft thrust washers and hub axle nuts several years ago and noise appeared to sound different.
Took to our Chevrolet dealership and they diagnosed it as worn lower control arm ball joints
Both lower control arm assemblies:
part#13463244 & #13463245 were replaced. Problem solved.
Unsure what could have been contributing factors to these parts failing: dealership service writer suggested poor road pavement conditions. Wonder if the following could also have helped accelerate the wear: maintaining tire inflation at 40-42 psi, running non-spec Goodyear replacement tires, latest generation of winter liquid road de-icers, driving car in low "gear" or aggressive driving habits.
Unsure how common this type of failure has been on Gen1 Volts?
