Chevy did a lot of impressive improvements worldwide as it has now ranked number 15, whereas, the overhyped Tesla is ranked number 25. The Volt alone has impeccable reliability even that it is a new technology. The new technology usually are often plague with tremendous problems, such as those of 2016 Honda Civic has several times more glitches than the new release Volt, and the reliability of the 2016 Honda Civic is ranked much worse than average. The Volvo XC90 SUV is also rated with a worse than average reliability even if loyal customers loved it. The Tesla Model X SUV just sucks when it comes to various troubles and glitches, but still the fans are extremely satisfied with it.

The Buick (remember that the 2nd Gen Volt will be marketed as Buick Velite in China) is ranked number 3! Congratulations GM! The Buick has outranked Tesla by a lot more when it comes to reliability. The Tesla is on the bottom 4 of brand reliability.

And it will surprise few that Toyota and it's luxury brand Lexus take the first two spots. They are amazing with reliability statistics. It makes me wonder why the only Toyota I ever bought was such a complete lemon.

I still have my 2001 Toyota Corolla at 265,000 miles plus. The door handles are falling apart, all the paint chips are stripping away. It has new tires and still can take the I-5 down to LA at speed of traffic, which is about 85 mph. We still have the 2007 Sienna, still runs great after 205,000 miles. No major problems, no broken water pumps, no transmission problems. Yeah, no timing belt issues because it uses chains.

Likewise our Chevy Cruze and Chevy Volt has been problem free. 2013 Chevy Cruze Eco trim has logged 140K miles already. No issues. 2011 Chevy Volt still can kick butts out of muscle cars from the traffic light, having 130,000 miles now with no problem few maintenance. Just started on our 2017 Chevy Volt. Hyundai was also very reliable, as it got 180K miles when we gave it away to our friend.

Our most unreliable cars were Plymouth Voyager, Volvo, Nissan, BMW and Ford. Yeah, our Toyota Tacoma Pickup truck was also a lemon.

I never expected the Chevy cars to exceed 60,000 miles before requiring major services. But here they are, running more than 130K and 140K without major service repairs, was truly impressed with the Volt 2011 reliability that it changed my general opinions about American cars! The 2013 Chevy Cruze was next to confirm it.

But of course, in every brand, even Toyota, lemons exist!

Unfortunately the Volt has lost its Recommended rating due to Poor reliability. Consumer Reports cites problems with the gas engine as a particular trouble spot.

Do you have a link to this? I'd like to learn more. It's surprising that the gas engine would have any issues due to the low amount of use for most drivers. I've probably only got 8k "gas miles" on my Volt. after 75K of driving.

Now isn't that the ultimate irony.

Also, FCA brands bringing up the rear, as usual.

Here are a couple of public links but they don't tell you much. Even the subscriber site is short on details about specifically what the problems are.

http://www.consumerreports.org/car-reliability/how-the-american-brands-perform-in-car-reliability/

TrueDelta has more specifics:

Coolant hose leaking
Electric drive module faulty
Software update for Engine
Cruise control failed
Car died on road "Shift to Park"
Recall for hestitation
Rear door alignment

Consumer Reports reliability rating by year
2011 insufficient data
2012 Good
2013 Good
2014 Good
2015 Fair
2016 Poor

Not only has the Volt lost its recommended status for the Gen II, Tesla Model S has regained its recommended status at CR.

CR is just so funny. Truedelta shows the the 2016 MY Model S with 79 repairs per 100 cars and the 2016 MY Volt with 29 repairs per 100 cars. Unless you think more problems are better the answer is pretty clear. Note that the worst year for the Volt (39 problems per 100) is better than the best year for the Model S (55 problems per 100 cars). We won't mention the 94 repair trips per 100 cars for the MY 2014 Model S.

Totally consistent with the experience of Volt and Model S owners on my electric car list.
