I have a 2012 volt. If I run out of charge and run on gas the car displays the words reduced propulsion after being parked. On start up the gas engine runs hard for about 5 minutes, the display returns to normal and I can drive the car.
This has gone on for more than a year. It has gotten worse. I have been to the dealer many times. They say they have no idea what that means. Is this a battery issue?

I have a 2011 but below is for the 11 & 12 (plus I have a 2016). You can get a software update to make the RP msgs go way. It may reduce your EV miles. I would suggest doing it tho.

It could be 'normal wear' (GM terms for battery degradation). See below.

How much gas do you normally keep in the Volt's fuel tank? If less than 1.5 - 2 gallons you may experience reduced propulsion.

This was the exact scenario I and others reported here for RP and needed to get our Volts reprogrammed. Gas certainly was not an issue in my case ... running out of charge and then the next start up was tho.
