Honestly, it doesn't look that bad. Guess I'm just used to rain here in the Pacific Northwest.

Just today was through a mild rain storm (was originally forecasted to be historic, but all hype) and sure enough, my rearview camera looks just like yours. Looking out the mirror was easier even with the flowing water.

But having a coating like rainx on the camera lens would be nice, I'm just not sure if we can apply rainx or not.

When it rains water gets on the rear window? And if water gets on a camera lens, the picture can look blurry?

I used to drive a 2004 Mercedes C230 Kompressor sport coupe, so it was the long two-door hatchback model. Rear window had about the same visibility as the Gen 2 Volt. No rear wiper option at all like the Gen 2 Volt. But, there was no backup camera at all.

So, even with water all over the lens, it's actually better visibility than some other (supposedly more upscale) cars on the road.

You "can't see out the rear view mirror".
Why not?
And that camera is better than nothing at all.

How did you ever back up a car in ancient times,,,, about 10 years ago?
What I mean is rear vision from the driver's pov is very limited compared to regular cars; agree (assuming you are a volt owner or have tried one)?

Agree. I'm not young and have driven Italian, German and American sporty cars from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, hundreds of rental car models in America and Europe, and now the Volt. Best overall car I've ever driven, however, worst visibility of all of them, especially to the rear in rain and dark. Worse than the mid-engine Italian supercar I owned and drove in all kinds of weather for 6 years.

RainX works wonders, especially at night.

In the days when a rear wiper was unheard of, and rear cameras were undreamed of, people never used to go out in the rain because it was too dangerous to reverse. The whole country would routinely grind to a halt at the very sign of a bit of rain.

Do you remember those days, when we'd all write in to government whilst stuck at home unable to reverse out of our drives safely? We'd demand how unacceptable it was that it's impossible to operate a motor vehicle safely with rain on the rear windscreen? So they gave us rear wipers and rear cameras, and made them legally mandated because of the impossibility of avoiding an accident without them.

..... Have I got any of that wrong?.....
