Rear door/window clicking

8242 Views 28 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  VoltAP1
Lately I have been hearing a clicking noise; almost like the sound of the power window motor makes when attempting to roll an already shut window close- a small click- when going over bumps or taking off from a stop.

Anyone else have this issue? I know in a car that sounds can bounce around and be difficult to pinpoint but just wondered if anyone else experienced this before I went to the dealer and have them look at this.

thanks

My dealer, Ted Britt Chevy in Sterling, VA, fixed the issue I was having, but I'm not sure it's the same as that reported by others in this thread. For me, the driver's door panel was a little loose, right where you'd rest your arm out the window. I demonstrated to them that it had more play than the other side, and that it made obnoxious clicking noises. Their tech reproduced, and they ordered a replacement panel under warranty! Sound is now gone.

Snorth funny story we go to ted britt in sterling as well. They told me they never had anyone complain about clicking before, I'll chalk that up to volume, maybe.

Either way update from GM executive customer service, per the dealer driving two other 17 volts and hearing clicking from those, they "GM" has deemed this behavior "operating characteristic of this year and model" aka tough luck. Funny our last one never clicked, ive never owned a car that randomly clicks as you drive. At this point if you have this issue, please report it to your dealer as this is a cop out for them to figure out what part is causing the issue. It seems more and more car companies due this until something breaks and they have no choice to fix it.

Well, again, our issues may be different, since mine was from the driver door panel, and not the rear.

I may give that a try when I decide to take it in. When I rest my arm on the door, it makes a creaking sound, and it creaks if you push in on it as well. So we might have the same thing.

Seeing this thread hasn't been updated in a while. Also having this problem -- phantom relay like clicking sounds that seemingly happen at random intervals. Sounds identical to when you pull the switch to raise a window that is already all the way up. Primarily happens on my drivers side front, but seem to have heard it elsewhere as well from time to time. Seems associated with cold weather but honestly not sure if I just didn't notice it before it got cold.

Has anyone found a solution to this?
Same here.

2018 LT, first noticed it yesterday. It was the coldest day of my driving it so far, low-mid 20s and wind chill, and I was blasting heat as I was driving.

Yesterday also happened to be the first time I ran the engine in 5 weeks, probably a coincidence. Started as EMM, then I decided to let the engine warm up a bit more so put it in Hold for the rest of the drive.

Seems to come from all 4 doors, randomly. Interestingly enough, when I "roll up" any of the already-closed passenger windows, the sound is identical to the random clicks coming from those doors. But not for the driver side. The "random" driver-side click sounds different from the "forced" driver side click.

Haven't tried any of the fixes suggested here yet. Doesn't sound like there's a definitive fix at this point, I'll start trying things if it keeps happening.

Based on my experience and the dates of the earlier posts sounds like it's definitely cold-related. Anyone else had this problem (re)appear as it got colder?

When it gets colder things shrink, therefore clearances are greater so parts can rub. Rubber seals get stiffer so instead of flexing they will slip (with the greater clearances) cause clicks to occur.
Count me in guys.

2018 LT (traded in my 2014!).

Sounds like a relay clicking, and sometimes... not there.
1 year in and I've got what sounds like this same click/rattle sound on the passenger front door, sounds like I've also got a click in the rear upper passenger seat area (maybe the seatbelt reel?) and a rattle coming from somewhere in the hatch area.

I already took the car in for the passenger door panel as it was super easy to reproduce and got a "could not reproduce". You could make it rattle by just tapping on the panel... They made it seem like they wouldn't even fix it unless a part was clearly defective (like it didn't fit).

Really disappointed with GM dealers and the interior quality of the Volt. I've never had a car have this variety of interior clicks and rattles 1 year in...
