Hi everyone, I have a 2017 chevy volt LT. Every time I ride, especially when I am going over bumps and bumpy roads, there is this rattling noise like an aluminum can bouncing around against metal. I think its something loose inside the rear trim assembly of the cargo lift/hatchback because when I shake or push back and forth the lift, the same sound occurs. I don't think its anything serious or something that immediately needs to be addressed but its really annoying to drive to. I tried to remove the rear trim assembly myself but could only open it partially as I was afraid any more force would break it. Any help would be awesome.

clucking noise in clunking from rear end of 2018 volt
Hi, my first post. I have a new volt with 600 miles on it. I've noticed a clucking noise from rear of the car (maybe right?)when driving on rough roads or going over a bump, like rr tracks or bridge abutments. The dealer has acknowleged the noise and seen the car. They have proposed a GM fix...

I just had all 4 tires replaced three weeks ago at the local dealer. Since then I have had a sound like rocks or pebbles hitting the rear wheel well when going over a depression but highly intermittent. Might only happen once or twice in a 40 mile trip. I just had the car in to the dealer today complaining that there must be something loose inside the driver side rear tire. Drove them crazy looking for a ghost. Maybe it is just the rear hatch as mentioned above? I will be trying the bumper adjust tomorrow. Surprised they did not mention the hatch if so many owners are having that problem.
My 2017 has the same clicking noise, similar to the sound a relay makes when activated. I am pretty sure it is coming from inside the driver side door, and that is NOT a relay. I have had the car about 18 months and trying to ignore it since it happens so infrequently. I agree it occurs more frequently during the summer. Someday I will remove the door panel to try to find the source.

I suspect it might be my hatch glass but I’m out of bumper to bumper warranty and not spending money to get it replaced!

I doubt the glass is loose, it's basically glued in. Perhaps the hatch frame is not closing tight enough and it's rattling. If so, as others have said, there are black rubber bumpers that can be adjusted by screwing them in/out with your fingers.
Or, get in the back while someone drives the car and maybe you can hunt down the rattle location. Perhaps it's loose trim or a loose cargo cover.

Thanks, I’ve adjusted them countless times with no change in the sound. Next step is pulling all the plastic off of the interior hatch area and see if that fixes it!
Seems a little drastic.
If you pull off all the trim you won't know which one is the culprit, assuming of course that the trim is the issue. Really, as others have suggested it's best to have someone drive it while you are back there looking for what's causing the rattle.

Update on my clicking noise from the rear:
I think I’ve narrowed it down to the rear passenger seat where it locks in to the hook. The plastic trim around there on the seat itself seems to be clicking when I drive (I think). Been 5 or so days with that seat down and no annoying click!

I'll have to try this. Been chasing down rattles in the Volt for a couple years now, can't say I've had much luck but hopefully there's something more permanent than just driving with the seat down!

Update: still have the metallic click. Lowing the rear passenger seat doesn’t help. I’ve removed almost all of the plastic trim from the hatch, even the stoppers on the hatch and it’s still there. It has gotten better somehow and is now even harder to replicate. I still think it’s the glass, I shoved shims in between the glass and metal hatch but it was still there. Seems so have lessened after that but it’s hard to say what made it marginally better.
I think you're right that it's the glass, I narrowed down my rattle to the glass. Pushing down heavy on it dampens the rattle a little. Here's another owner that had the rattle fixed at the dealer when they completely replaced the rear hatch glass: Lose Metal Rattle Noise from Hatch. This seems excessive for such a stupid rattle though. And I'm out of basic warranty and not sure if I can get this covered by GM.
P.S. for other commenters: it's not the hatch stoppers, this rattle is present even when the hatch is open and you bang on the hatch. It's coming from the driver's side rear part of the window.
