I just got my 2017 Volt, which I love so far (after 1 day!!). Tried connecting my cell phone via USB for the first time (Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge) to USB to try out the projection feature, and no matter what I do, it doesn't seem to work. Any ideas? Has anyone else gotten it to work?

I have 2 ideas.
1. Make sure that your 2017 has Android Auto installed. Some where in the settings, in the Personalization Menus, you will see a listing for Android Auto if it is installed.
2. On the phone itself, when plugged into the USB, you should get a message about what type of USB connection you want with the car. The default is "charging". You will want to change it to "Media" if I remember correctly. I have the S7 (no edge) and it works perfectly.
If all goes well, the projection icon on the center screen, will change to the Android Auto icon.

Also - be certain that you have downloaded/installed the Android Auto app on your phone from the Play store. Once you have it, it should recognize your device.

I tried it with two different Android phones and had different experiences.

1. Galaxy Note 7: I tried hooking up a friend's Note 7 and it worked right away. Phone was paired and set up in under a minute.

2. Blackberry Priv: This phone also worked fine but for some reason would not let me set up the connection unless the car was in park and the parking brake was set. I didn't have to do this with the Note 7.

As always YMMV.

So I don't have the setting for Android Auto. How do I get that installed? Do I take it to a dealer, or is it something I can do myself? I'm very technical, so if it is possible, I'm comfortable doing it on my own.

There was a software update for the '16s that included Android Auto. The later '17s should already have it installed. You won't see the option for it anywhere unless your phone is plugged in and the Android Auto app recognizes it's connected. The "Projection" icon will change to say "Android Auto"

Make sure you download the Android Auto app from the Play Store before plugging your phone in.

Thanks. I did download the app, and when I plug in the phone, nothing changes. I will try it again in a bit and see if I can make it work. Does Android auto need to be open when you plug it in? Usually I'm not this dense!

It doesn't normally need to be open, but the first time you connect the phone, you'll need to open the app (with the vehicle on/READY and in Park) and go through an initial setup process that involves accepting some permissions and the terms of use. After that, you don't even have to unlock your phone.

Hi muzicman0,

We see you've been having some difficulty with your Android Auto. We're sorry to hear this, and while we understand you may be looking to troubleshoot this yourself, please know we'd be happy to assist in scheduling an appointment if you decide to take your Volt to the dealership.

Please send a private message with your contact information, VIN, mileage and preferred dealer if you are interested.

Best,

If your friend has a Galaxy Note 7 he should take it back to the store and get a refund. The Galaxy Note 7 is banned from all airlines. You cannot fly with it. It is dangerous. Your friend needs to get rid of it.

But think about how much faster you could warm up the inside of your car in the morning

The bolded statement that Arcanox made is not true.

If you have android auto installed on your volt, it will show up in the settings menu when the car is turned on. It is right below the Car Play option if i recall correctly. Start here then work your way through other suggestions by others.

If it is not in the setting menu with the vehicle on, then you'll have to schedule the upgrade at the dealership. Good luck.

Sorry to say that this is a dealer only install. It requires a long download from GM to a dealers flash drive. Then, as I understand, it is a long install into the car. They have to install it in service mode with the car hooked up to an external 12 volt supply. Be ready for it to take at least 2 hours (probably longer). I got my 2017 before AA was available also, but I waited until I needed the tires rotated before I took it in.

Well...I got the update today (as well as one that fixed the heat), but now the Pandora app is gone, and doesn't work. Is this normal? The dealer said they couldn't find anything that said that it would be gone. And just in case anyone asks...yep, I went left and right to see if it was on a different screen.

My bad; I forgot the settings menu had an option for those. I was mainly referring to the fact that the "Projection" icon does not say "Android Auto" unless the app is set up correctly on the phone.

The Pandora MyLink app is still there for me...I can play Pandora through either that or through Android Auto. I'm not sure why it would disappear from the update unless they did something wrong.

Just to be clear, you still have the Pandora app on the screen, correct (you can touch it from the home scree)? The dealership is trying to convince me that it should no longer be there, and that you have to use Android Auto to stream.

I also spoke with the Infotainment support line, and they did confirm that the app should still be there as well.

When I got the AA update installed the Pandora app on screen disappeared.

When I got the update, the Pandora icon on the main screen remained and continued to work...
