When I was a kid, they were 19 cents. In college, there was some special sale for 39 cent whoppers at the local Burger King. I bought 20 of them, took them home, and microwaved them for meals of the next week.

What kills me is that when I was 7, my father bought a Plymouth Satellite for about $1400. In the dealer lot sitting right next to his new car was a lime green Plymouth Superbird with a $3400 price tag. I told him he should buy that car and he replied "no, it is way too expensive." I think anybody today would be happy to spend $3400 for that car as it's worth $300K-$1M+ today. Heck, I blow through way more than $3400 per month today.... yes, the value of a dollar has changed dramatically.Ha. When I was a kid, Regular gas at the corner Gulf gas station cost 19 cents and air for my bicycle tires was free! Milk cost 14 cents a quart, butter was 41 cents a pound, a Studebaker Champion sedan cost $730 and a Cadillac cost $4,045. The dollar has cheapened quite a bit since then! Ford, a privately held company, allowed Henry Ford to become a billionaire. I'm not sure how many more there were then, but, as of October 4, 2016, there were 540 billionaires in the U.S..
I’m one of those weirdos whose kids graduate from college debt free. My father did that for me, I’m doing it for them. When I was a kid, lobster and salmon were poor people's food. It's not that I lived in a posh neighbourhood, either., tastes just changed.
My first years in university we had a meal plan, and every Saturday night it was t-bone steaks. Now you have twenty years of debt when you graduate. Onward and upwards...
I had an 85 Toyota supra. Headlights from the dealership were $60 apiece. Headlights from western Auto were $7 apiece with a lifetime warranty that they actually honored many years later (so 4 headlights for $14).If you think GM parts are bad, try Toyota.
Man, I should have gotten my clip from you, though fuel and time to drive up to Chicagoland completely negates any savings.I paid $11 for that clip and the visor at a U-Pull It auto yard. The visor alone is ~$125 from GM. Took it out of a wrecked 2014 Cruise, installed it in my Bolt EV. The visor is telescoping (not available at any price on a Bolt). I did not need the clip, but hey, if I ever do...
Her college savings is done. The money is sitting in an investment account just waiting to be used. I’m kicking myself for not investigating 529s and ESAs when she was young, but that was me before I truly became the greenback troll. So for anyone just starting out, getting married, and having kids, need all the Greenback Troll advice sprinkled throughout these forum pages.Pay for all but $11 of her college and then when she asks why, show her this post.
