I seem to remember someone powering light and tools through there volt. Is this possible, or even advisable. How would you do it. I'm not thinking of powering off the 12 volt battery but the main battery.
I don't think there is any readily available access to the main battery.
People have even powered their homes (parts of it) during power outages, by adding an AC inverter to the 12V battery (EV Extend sells kits). Some users use it when camping. As long as you ensure the power draw is within the limits of the 12V battery and follow standard safety precautions of working with electricity, it is possible.
I don't know of anyone tapping the main battery, but there are a lot of people who have hooked an inverter to the 12 V battery. I think you can get 1500 watts or so. The 12V battery is kept charged by the main battery if you leave the car on.
You can only use the power from the 12 volt battery. The high voltage system is isolated when the car is off. Would never recommend tapping in to any high voltage system, this can cause issues with the car and is also unsafe.
