I have about a week left on my 2013's initial free OnStar subscription and I must decide what to do. I'm on the fence.
What did you do when your free subscription ended? (Please: past tense only, not what you may do in the future.)
Since I have a smartphone, I'm thinking of just continuing with the Protection package, for some added security in case of an accident. But I'd be interested in what your thinking was when you had to decide. Thanks!

I haven't crossed that bridge yet, but our 2011 is getting very close. We still have another year on the 2014. I might keep the minimum necessary to be able to use voltstats.

I gave it up, as Basic was not free at the time. Then a few weeks ago I got a notice of free basic for 3 years. Signed up for that just to get the smartphone app working again.

I got the free basic. I rarely use it. I never used any premium services when I had them. Since I have a smartphone, I do not need or want to call an onstar adviser for directions or to make restaurant reservations. I would rather do that directly myself. Some people like that kind of thing, though.

I went with the Protection package. I am only interested in the emergency response in case of an accident and the insurance discount.
I can do my own navigation.

You don't get stolen vehicle assistance with Protection pkg do you? I really wanted that.
With the Protection package you get the "locate your car" feature on the phone app. If my car were stolen, I can show it to the police myself. The only thing I can't do is disable the car remotely for a police chase.

Basic. Also have AAA which covers the driver no matter what car. Much better deal.

I largely agree with the above sentiments. I don't live a lifestyle that depends on a concierge service. Since the advent of the smartphone, Onstar services are largely redundant. If they offered an OnStar Ala-Carte service. Pay a Nominal fee per call service, I might use it at my discretion. If my vehicle is stolen, which seems increasingly difficult these days, short of carjacking. The car can't be driven without the coded key fob. I would gladly pay a onetime fee for service to have Onstar locate it. I'm not going to pay a subscription service for something that would be the equivalent of winning the lottery.

I have a basic XM package $7.99 mo which I enjoy and listen to when ever I'm in the car. I USE IT.

I never used the Free trial Onstar service beyond the vehicle status info on the remote app. I do miss it, but can live without it.

I just took the Free basic plan for another 3 years. When that runs out, I'll dump it. unless they come up with a better basic plan for $40 per year.

I renewed with the protection plan - for the vehicle status and roadside assistance. I wanted the security plan, but I didn't know how to go about getting a better price for it.

XM is easy, just say 6 for $30 or 5 for $25.

I went with guidance, which has been useless. 9 times out of 10 when I have attempted to use the blue button, I have been put on hold waiting for a rep to answer. When that expires in a few months, I will go to the security package level. The Orange Overlord moved me to a new satellite corporate office in a bad area of town, so I will want them to be able to locate the car should it be stolen.

4. Basic

After my 6 months of free full options OnStar with my 2017 Premium Volt, I went to Basic (free for 5 years). After I had an email from OnStar that they were going to start charging me $36 a month, I had OnStar remove my credit card (took a week for the programmer to do it) so that I didn't get accidentally charged for anything (already got charged for extra data minutes after I had disabled WiFi the previous month).

I have a toll free number with my AllState auto insurance that I can call for towing.

I have a navigation system and Android Auto so I don't need directions from OnStar.

My phone app still works fine for Key Fob commands and Vehicle Status, which is all I use.

I wonder how your free basic still has vehicle status. Mine only has fob functions.
