An intriguing new Golf from Volkswagen has been announced by CEO Martin Winterkorn, known as the Twin Drive.

It's a diesel-electric hybrid capable of running for 50km (31 miles) on battery power alone.

Battery news (older story)

Sanyo, which has the biggest global market share of lithium-ion batteries used in personal computers and mobile phones, said it would spend 80 billion yen ($769 million) over the next seven years for the project, aiming to begin mass production in 2009.

Is that a scintilla of a movement away from hydrogen I just saw Jason?
LOL - absolutely not, as the Japanese are also putting fuel cells in every phone, toy, watch, pen - pretty much following their proliferation of digital clocks.

There latest is a fuel cell with Lithium Ion battery in the same package, allowing the user plenty of time to recharge the hydrogen, before their device shuts down.

Wow, that is going to be a sweet car!! My girlfriend and I just picked up a brand new VW Golf for her last night. They are pretty solid cars and with a diesel and electric motor that thing will not only be quick but will get incredible mileage. I wish they had a diesel available for this model year in the Golf because we were stucking getting a gas version.

I love diesels (I drive an '05 Passat TDI), but the price per gallon is killing me. MPGs are great, but ugh...electric any day of the week.
