I've heard that there is a mandatory "noise required" legislation to prevent pedestrians from being hit at low speeds which involves EVs being required to emit some sort of sound? Does the Volt have this? I can't hear anything when I'm slowly driving mine? (damn pedestrians are probably zoned out with their face in their phone and/or their earbuds on anyway)

The Gen 2 Volts do. It operates at 19 MPH and under as I recall.

It's not mandatory until September 2019 (in the US anyway). Even then, it's only mandatory for the manufacturers to include the noise device, it still won't be mandatory to have the device operational on your vehicle.

The sound is faint. Put the car in gear and engage the parking brake. Walk to the front of the car. If you have it, you will hear it. I only hear it with my windows down in the garage.

I don't believe in the need at all. Just because someone can't hear a car coming, it doesn't mean that you have to make a noise to warn them. The horn is more than enough to wake up or warn pedestrians that your are near, because many don't even watch where they are walking. I may feel some sympathy for the sightless, but if we allow then to rule how we drive, then the next item will be the deaf wanting some bright flashing lights, too!

If my EV has the warning sound, I will disable it. Here in Puerto Rico we have no traffic law that requires it. I wish someday to wait at a traffic light and hear no noise coming from any vehicle at all (except some cooling fans and obnoxiously loud music).

Did you actually hack into the car's recording sample to add your own?...I'd like something similar to the whoosh sound we hear when we first start the car, only a longer loop of course...if it's gotta make noise, at least make it something that makes people wonder what it is?

I'd much rather have a water sprayer mounted in the grille. If someone is walking down the middle of a parking lot lane like an oblivious idiot, I can just soak them instead of beeping them.

Today I pulled fuse 5 in the trunk. Now I have no "vacuum cleaner hiss". It's a great mod that has been mentioned in other threads. the only issue I (and others) have noticed is the loss of the "beep-beep" sound when I plug the charger into the Volt. No biggie.

The car is now whisper quiet!
