Does anyone know of an app that will plan your route to optimize battery range and estimate regen? ie: Avoiding highways over 50mph, steep hills etc.

Try this:

Evtripplanner.com

I use "Tesla Model S 60D 19' tires" to return relatively similar kWh usage to the 2nd Generation Volt. Try dragging the path of your route to yield different results. Nifty tool.
