Onstar security issue

I returned my 2011 Volt back in December of 2013. Just the other day I was using the Onstar app and the car was back on my account. I called Onstar to have them remove it again. I think this is a security issue as I could unlock the car, good think you can't locate 2011 Onstar vehicles.

My guess is that the car was recently sold and someone re-activated the car and it went into the wrong account.

Me three. Been over 17 months since I sold it but I still get the onstar reports and phone alerts. The sad part is I know it only gets charged 2-3 times a year. With the recent app update, I now know where it is and can finally put my curiosity to rest and terminate the connection.

If you have sold or traded your vehicle, you will need to call OnStar at 888-4ONSTAR, and let us know you are no longer in possession, so that we can cancel that subscription. This will also remove access to the vehicle from your RemoteLink application. Without notifying us that the vehicle has been sold or traded, OnStar has no way of knowing that you are no longer in possession of the vehicle. Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

So the dealer you return it to, does not do this?
For security purposes, the dealer does not have security access to your account. Only the account owner can call us to cancel.

Sara, I did speak with OnStar to let them know that I do not own the vehicle anymore but I still have access.
I would be happy to look into this for you to ensure that vehicle is canceled and you no longer have access to it. Please send me a PM with the account number and VIN of the vehicle. Thanks!

Sara,

For security purposes, the dealer does not have security access to your account.
This brings to mind an entry in my Service Records that I didn't recall entering myself, but have since edited with more info. Do dealers have the ability to Push service records to your vehicle's OnStar account?

I would love it if they could. I maintain my tire maintenance from Discount Tires there myself, but also have to transcribe my dealer receipts into there. When I've visited the dealer, they can tell me of every issue and resolution that resulted.

Please say yes, that they can push it to the vehicle's OnStar account or that there may be plans in the works to allow a PUSH but not directly have READ access!!

Same thing happened to us with XM. Sold our Acadia a year ago, but still get renewal offers. I've called them to tell them we don't own the car, but the offers still come.

I'm not sure if this will apply to you, but I had a portable Sirius radio that broke. I cancelled the subscription and received renewal offers for months. I finally figured out that I could log in to my account and mark the radio as no longer being in my possession. This might work for you.

you would think it would be part of the process that the dealer notify OnStar as it is a HUGE security issue until the new owner establishes their own account if they ever do. I would think the process could somehow be automated.

What part of the dealer has no access to Onstar Accounts, posted above, don't you get? Now, what it has to do with accounts I'm not sure, I would think it has to do as much with VINs and the dealers could certainly notify OnStar to cancel ALL/ANY OnStar accounts on vehicle VINs they have taken possession of.

So basically, since I bought my car used, the previous owner still has access to my car via OnStar?

When I bought it at the dealership, I went through the OnStar welcome process and they should have figured out that the ownership changed hands.

Vehicles can only be bound to one OnStar account at a time. If you have gone through the OnStar setup and currently have an OnStar account in your own name, then it has been removed from the previous owner's account. I hope this answers your question!

Yes it does. Thanks.

So basically the problem would only occur if a person bought a used Volt and did not activate Onstar for the vehicle... and OnStar still thinks the previous owner is driving the vehicle and their subscription has not expired.

I certainly agree with OnStar's policy of not letting dealers monkey around with MY private OnStar account!

And anyone purchasing a used car with OnStar... I recommend calling OnStar and reading them the VIN to check if it's already registered to someone else. (The dealer will LIE TO YOU about this. He will say ANYTHING to sell a car.) Check it your SELF! If OnStar says it's registered to someone else tell the dealer you cannot buy the car until the other owner releases the car from his account.

As for trusting a dealer to set up my OnStar account... NEVER trust a dealer!

MY OnStar account is MY account. Not the property of some unscrupulous, greedy car dealership. I certainly do NOT want some shady car dealer deciding what can be charged to my credit card by remote control... Or adding & removing cars from MY account. (No thanks!)

Would you leave your gold Rolex watch and your wedding ring in the car when you turn it in and blindly trust the dealership to mail you back your items left behind? (If so... you are probably in for a big disappointment.)

It's YOUR OnStar account linked to YOUR credit card. Pick up the darn phone and CANCEL IT of you don't want the next driver using YOUR account. It's YOUR responsibility. (Not OnStar's. Certainly NOT the dealership.) it's no different than moving out of your HOUSE and leaving the electricity on your account for the new owners. Of course you have to CALL the electric company and tell them to close your account when YOU MOVE OUT of the house. OnStar is no different. If you get a new car... CALL OnStar and CANCEL the old car from YOUR account right away. Better yet... Call OnStar BEFORE you turn in your old car and VERIFY the OnStar is disconnected BEFORE you turn in the old car.

And NEVER trust a car dealer! (LAST people on earth you should trust!)

SEE, That 3-5 years of free On-Star service bits us again

but- I sold my last car to a friend with 2 weeks left on the plates

$200 later in Dallas toll charges - so add that to Fulgerite "NEVER trust a car dealer!

----
yes ,he had a toll tag - but as you know any electronic reading errors use the picture of plate.

Unfortunately, only someone with access to your OnStar.com account can modify your service records. With our Dealer Maintenance Notifications, your dealership can receive certain service and diagnostic information from OnStar, but they cannot edit your service records. I wish I had better news to share.

I'm with many of you. I've sold a Volt and still have many connections to it. How do I remove it from the RemoteLink app? Do I have to "Change Vehicle" and/or "Deactivate Onstar" from the settings? Even though I've called Onstar, I still have received the monthly Diagnostic Reports. I still see it across the top of the webpage at Onstar.com. For that matter, I still see it at Volt Stats with no clear understanding on how I can remove it from anyone of them??

Onstar has been contacted twice. The first time I called I explained that I was trading in one Volt for a new Volt. They transferred minutes that I had with that account and carried forward. A month later I had indicated that I still had access to the first Volt from RemoteLink and from the website. Now the 3 month, as indicated, nothing has changed. I feel a little guilty that I have this access as it may be considered an invasion of privacy??

Voltairean,

I would be more than happy to help out with this. Please send me a PM with your account number and the full VIN of the Volt in question. Thank you!

I have a similar problem. I owned a 2011 Volt which was totaled in an accident. I replaced it with a 2013 Volt. The car still shows up in my RemoteLink App, and there doesn't appear to be a way to delete it. It doesn't show up anywhere else, and I don't receive any diagnostic reports, or anything like that. It just still appears in the vehicles list on my RemoteLink app.

When I purchased my 2014 Impala last year, part of the process was to activate Onstar in this new vehicle. While on the phone with OnStar, the representative noticed our old 2001 Impala. I told them were were at the dealer picking up our new car and were were relinquishing ownership of the old 2001. If I remember correctly, the account was terminated and the dollar value of our subscription was credited back to the charge card we had used. They told me it would take a day or two for the changes to migrate through their systems. I had to call OnStar back when I got home as the number I was given had an area code from Georgia if I remember correctly and I am from New England. All call would have probably been long distance. I think the next person I spoke to put the 2001 Impala back into rotation and I did not know that. A week or two later the 2001 Impala was back and necessitated another call to finally stop it from showing up.
