so i guess 3 weeks into my new gen 2 volt my trial onstar wifi internet ran out, all 3gb of it. incidentally, i could no longer access my car's status via the app remotely. is it because my onstar internet is done? that's kinda a bummer.

is there a way to remotely check if the car is charging without renewing the stupidly expensive onstar data plan?

No. The Onstar Data Plan has nothing to do with access to the status. You should be able to use either of the web sites or either phone app. There is something else wrong here.
I have a 3 year Onstar plan but the data plan ran out long ago. I never needed a "hot spot" inside my car.

You do not need to maintain cellular data, nor a higher-tier level of onstar beyond the free trial for those features. OnStar Basic is included for 5 years and covers use of the App and remote starting.

That said, it would then seem there is something wrong. I'm not aware of any in-vehicle settings that would influence this. The WiFi hotspot does not need to be enabled, and you cannot disable the cell radio. How long have you been without access? The app does occasionaly have downtime. See if you can pull info from the car via web vs mobile:
