I started the car and got my audible book playing. Just as I was about to shift and drive home from work, the audible book stopped playing and I heard a very loud "Message from OnStar: Did you know... blah blah blah" telling me about some OnStar feature. It played twice and then said "OnStar call ended".

Is this normal? I don't mind the OnStar services, but it is NEVER ok to call the car, auto-answer, and start playing some BS help tips.

Must be a new Gen2 thing since I've never had something like this occur on my Gen1 the past 5yrs...

That happened to me once as well, probably sometime after my free period expired and I did not start subscribing. If you think of it as advertising (which is is) it is completely invasive and inappropriate. Or you could think of it as the car telling you how to activate one of it's features, which is a good thing. Since it was just one time, I did not let it get under my skin. They sent me some junk mail as well, which I also ignored.

It happened to me twice when I first got my car and was nearing the end of the trial period. I'd agree it is a little disconcerting but I didn't think too much of it.

I renewed my plan so it hasn't happened since. Could be worse though - I recently had to use a loaner car and upon starting it up (every time) I got a speech about how "the car was in demonstration mode connected by Onstar" :)

Wow, something to look forward to. The basic Onstar plan is supposed to be for 5 years. I guess they want the up sale.

Both the loaners I have had from the Dealer were in Demo mode. Kinda annoying.

I could see this distracting a driver and resulting in an accident. All the driver will need to do is subpoena OnStar's call record for that vehicle and show it occurred at the same time as the accident. GM would be held for a big legal liability for this.

^ it happens as soon as you turn the car on, so by the time you get your seat belt on and the car in gear, it is about over.
OnStar did this to me back in 2012 and I was approaching a red light at the time. They didn't even bother to ring the car's phone so I could decide to answer or ignore the call, just popped in over the sound system. I was rather pissed because right when they broke in another car had just pulled out in front of me and I had to evade the other car.

The funny part is that I was so interested in making it stop that I have no idea what feature it was trying to tell me about. Perhaps I'll just hit the on-star button and see what they say about making it STFU.

well they need to adjust for the times. used to be their service was worth it to many but smartphones have pretty much eclipsed the ability of in dash systems, let alone remote support for navigation
Yeah, I think it's a overpriced too. I keep it anyway for the wife's safety, and to keep my cell accounts going in both vehicles. I don't have one of those things glued to my hand. I rarely use a cell for making calls anyway, but it's there if we need it and it's still less money than most people's cell bills.
