Scenario:
When my iPhone 7 is connected via Bluetooth and I receive text/iMessages I don't get any kind of notification unless I happen to see the popup on the phone itself. The phone won't make any noise and the car doesn't indicate anything. Regular phone calls come through the car system fine.

If I connect the phone via the USB cable to use CarPlay then the text message popups will appear on the car screen, but there is no audible notification so I only see them if I happen to look at the screen for the few seconds when the notification pops up.

What am I missing here?

As far as I know the carplay visual pop up is it for the volt system for txt messages. You can ask through Bluetooth via audio command to have any new text messages read but I don't think you'll know when they show up

The manual says "see my.chevrolet.com website for a list of compatible device" and nothing about this on the website at all...
that is a big FAIL.
If someone have a link to the "compatible device list" I'm very interested!

Right, if I happen to see the popup on the screen I can hold down the talk button on the steering wheel to bring up Siri and then say "Play text messages" and it will read them to me, but if I don't happen to see the popup on the screen there's no audio notification or anything to alert me I have a message... and the audio that normally would come out of the phone for a text message doesn't play either.

I thought maybe if I didn't have CarPlay in use it would at least play the alert tone out of the phone but if the phone is connected to the car via Bluetooth that doesn't even work. The only time I get an audio alert is if I'm receiving an actual phone call.

Is your ringer switch on? I believe Apple only plays text message sounds through CarPlay if the switch is on. Otherwise, notifications just pop up on the screen like your describe. This is actually nice because it gives users the option of not being interrupted by the notification sounds.

Text message sounds aren't played if your phone is just paired via Bluetooth. If your ringer switch is on, you should hear the phone's alert sound and know to use Siri Eyes Free to read you the new message.

I had the same problem with IPhone 6s and I couldn't solve it. Two weeks ago I decided to buy a new model IPhone 7 and you know with this phone I didn't have the problem and I shouldn't fix anything, just everything starts working.
