Yesterday I was trying a few resistor values to defeat the ERDTT. I tried a 5K resistor which worked (albeit displaying +48c on the center console).

This morning commute the ERDTT turned on for the whole commute, and there was no temperature display. I plugged the original sensor back in but it still not displaying the temperature. Any ideas ?

No need to re-invent the wheel, a 1/4w, 39k Ohm resistor works.

My guess is a loose connection at the sensor, hence no reading.

You have an open loop on the outside temperature circuit. The car reads this as -40C (-40F), which is why ERDTT is running. Undo your modifications and take it in to your favorite dealership and have them fix the sensor.
