New noise: like teeth of a comb

In the last week I have become aware of a new noise which sounds like it is coming from the front of the car, perhaps at the front driver side wheel. Both times I heard it the car was at low speed (< 5 mph) and the brakes were probably engaged. It sounded to me like what you hear when you run your finger over the teeth of a comb. Or for you electric guitarists, it was like when you slide your pick slowly along a fat string right above the pickup. The first time I heard it, I was driving with the windows down. The second time my wife borrowed the car and as she was backing out of the garage I was in front of the car and I heard it much more clearly. I've only heard it those two times. I don't remember ever hearing it before. Anyone else heard this noise or know what it is?

12V - I'm not a guitarist, so I need more info :) . Is it a metal-to-metal noise, like a "clunk" noise? I'm guessing it's a different type of noise.

Mine developed a noise at a very similar position you've described above. In my case, I heard the "clunk" everytime I drove over a sharp bump or a pothole.

It turned out to be a missing brake caliper bolt. My dealer had not seen it before, and they didn't know what could have caused the bolt to fall out. FYI, my car (2012) developed the problem after 11 months and 17,000 miles.

Many teeth or one tooth?

plink plink plink plink plink?
plink plink plink plink?
plink plink plink?
plink plink?
plink?

It may be as simple as something stuck between the brake pad and rotor. As a fellow guitarist, I don't think it is the same "clunk" Edju is talking about.

I get that sound from the front drivers wheel, but also get the "Low Traction" warning on the display. I belive it is the anti-lock breaking system. I had that happen this morning, 55 degrees, dry bummpy road, downhill right turn, 30 MPH breaking lightly. I get the low traction and this sound too often when there should definatlly not be a problem. Sometimes 15 MPH breaking gentlly on dry level roads. It is on my list to get cheked out when I bring it in for the first service. Maybe a faulty sensor.

It's the sound of several comb teeth:

plink plink plink plink plink plink

decreasing in pitch until it stops.

Doesn't sound like the table saw or the clunk.

I'll keep an ear on it, although summer has arrived in Florida which means windows up and A/C on, so not sure if I'll be able to hear it for awhile.

12V - based on your last description, emartin00 might be right about something stuck in / around the brake pad. If you have a floor jack at home, I would remove the front wheel and see if there are any foreign objects.

Good luck!

Good Morning 12V,

This is a wild guess, but something easy to inspect. Take a look at the plastic overflow hose on the coolant bottle circled below. If it finds it's way between the fan motor mount and the fan blades you could experience similar sounds when the fan is turn on at low speeds. If it did find it's way in there, you can pull it out from above. Hope this helps!

I have the exact same noise you describe on the drivers side front wheel. I describe it as a chirp but comb teeth is a good descriptor too. Mine developed just a couple of months after i got the car. Took it in and they said there was a TSB (forgot the #) which described a different type of sound. The TSB called for a revised brake pad and mine were replaced. The noise seemed to go away for a short period but came back fairly quickly. I've got almost 16K on the car and I have not brought it back to have it checked further. Seems to be a harmless noise at this point and heard only when pulling into garage with window down.

I had a similar sound in my Saturn Vue it was a bad bearing, if you want to diagnose it take the wheel off with the car I neutral set the rear bake. While turning the axil if the sound comes from the center of the axil it is wheel bearing if it comes from the caliper or brake pad area it is brake related.

I had a very similar noise, I even posted about it a few weeks ago. I also said it sounded like a comb rubbing over something rubber. Only in my case, it happened when turning the steering wheel, particularly in and out of parking spots. After taking it to the dealer it ended up being a strut bearing that was out.

The dealer confirmed the noise on our Volt right away - after they compared it to another Volt that was there for another issue. I'm told that something had to be re-programmed.

I'll post again with I get the work-order in my hand. If they had put it on the charger last night, we could have picked it up today.

I don't think these dealers/service advisors realize that Volt owners habitually check their vehicles' charging status - and whether the vehicle has even been moved [down to 1/100th of a mile on Voltstats] since last checked.

The last time our Volt was there, they had to eat crow on a statement about when our Volt was attached to a charger.

Hmmm, have not heard of that. However I do on occasion hear what sounds like a ratchet making a couple turns from the rear of the car but only when charging. I believe this is normal though.
